I have a 19 year old in the Marine Corps and loves it. He has a trust fund set up to go to college but told me he wanted to serve his country while he figures out what career path he wants to take before taking on getting a degree. My daughter is getting close to graduating college. I was a pain in my parents arse growing up. Hated school and loved to party. Was very fearful I’d get kids worse than me for what I put my parents through but I did get my act together when I was around 20 and got a MBA. I dodged a bullet because my kids got their act together.

Pretty good so far.
# 1 entering law school in the fall.
# 2 Freshman at LSU.
Both are doing great with grades and relationships.
I’m still paying for everything though.

Hardest part is when your sweet well mannered children turn 10+ and say they hate you over the most minute thing.
I expected this as a teenager, not in tween years.

I'm blessed. My kids and grandkids all have become really good people. One of the things I give daily thanks for.

Say what you mean and mean what you say
Treat kids with respect and respect will be returned. If not, bust their azz (see point 1 in how to do this and azz whipping will be needed twice max). Will be needed though.
Have fun with your kids. Spend good times with them. Often. Don’t get distracted from that.
Parent can be a friend but a friend cannot be a parent. Get that right. Important.
So far so good on the results. Could not be more proud.

My son Braxton was a travel ball all-star. He is grown up now and is a baw. He makes bout $350,000 right out of college. A while back he bought a new truck and has truck nuts hanging from it. He also has his truck raised way up and has a sticker in his window that says "this truck is raised so fat chicks can't get in." Only thing he did that disappointed me was get a "New Iberia" haircut. I told him "you ain't even from Louisiana."
My daughter is a little different. She in on TikTok constantly making "yoga" videos and often goes to the gym and films guys looking at her. (She got thrown out of a gym the other day for it). I asked her why she does that and she said "all the girls do it on TikTok." My son told me "she has nudes on Reddit." However, I don't know if that's true or not.

An opportunity to brag on my kids? I accept!
Son is in med school and intends to be a pediatric heart surgeon. Oldest daughter has been accepted into and will start masters program this fall to become a Speech Pathologist. Youngest daughter is freshman in college and intends to be an elementary school counselor. All are absolutely pursuing what it seems they were put on this earth to do. Not sure how much their mom and I have to do with their success, but I will say that we were very intentional about figuring out early what they were capable of achieving and then holding them to a very high standard that lined up with their academic abilities. Respect and concern for others was always demanded of our children by my wife and I, and we still demand it even today, although it’s never an issue.
When people ask how we ended up with 3 awesome kids, I thank them for the kind words and add that best I can tell, God felt really bad that my wife has to deal with me every day, so he gave her awesome kids to balance it out.

my parents are west Texas rednecks who raised my sister and i with the same firm hand.
i'm a 39 yo libertarian Christian that moved out at 19 and never went back home. graduated college with no help and no student loan debt. 2 kids, steady income.
my sister is 43, lived at home till she was 27, is a communist lesbian who is still in student debt and is 100 lbs over weight and has type 2 diabetes. she is still dependent on my parents.
same upbringing and training.
ETA: my sons are 13 and 16 currently. i don't care about their financial success or if they turn out to be communists. i care that they are kind, Christlike men that are protectors.

My only child is my 19 year old daughter. She works full time and goes to college full time. She doesn't use drugs and doesn't drink much. She's going to Europe in June and I'm taking her to NYC in July. She's been through a lot for her age and I'm very proud of her.

Daughter graduates UGA in two months and off to Med School after that
Son is in his second year of college and has no clue what he wants to do and is lazy.
We raised them both the same, I think some people are born with a drive to succeed and others have no drive at all. We got one of each.

I have 3 boys and a girl. Ages 34 to 43.
Oldest is a manager at a car collision service. He likes his job and it pays well. He has 3 children and is 43. Very easy going and obedient child. He was divorced a few years ago and is getting married again in May. We are very happy for him.
Second son, 38, was our challenge. He was the most intelligent and very handsome. He was home schooled because he wasn’t a sit at a desk all day kid. Very easy to teach and receptive. His problem was the girls and drugs. Spent 8 years in the 82nd Airborne with tours in South Korea, Iraq, and Afghanistan. After getting out of the army and a brief stint in jail, he is clean and sober. He works on helicopters at a local airport, which was his army job. So far, so good. No kids.
Daughter, 42, mother of 2 college graduates, one with a with Masters, the other working on it. She’s been in admin positions at 2 major banks since high school. Married 21 years. It’s a mixed marriage and they are very happy. Humor carries them through any rough spots.
Youngest son, 34, is a police detective. He is married to a pediatrician and has 2 children. He was homeschooled until high school then was class valedictorian when he graduated. He was the easiest to raise.
All in all, I’d say between being determined to provide a good home and strong marriage (42 years), always belonging to a Bible preaching church and homeschooling the youngest two, we made it through.
Many blessings to you as you start out.

Daughter will be going to college next fall. Wants to be a DR, but time will tell. She has been the model student, and all-around good kid. Works hard, no complaints. She will do well in life.
Son, 13, is a work in progress. He is smarter than my daughter but hates school and has difficulty staying focused.

I have 2 and both turned out great. Both have careers, both married their college sweetheart, both have a child, both have bought their own home. One is a teacher and one is a Staff Sargent.
And both were smart enough to leave NOLA!
