They turn out just like you train them.
A naive belief that is just not true.
Yeah, that was my thought, too. It sounds like a cop-out for bad parents, but the simple fact is I didn't listen to a damned thing my parents told me. I guess I turned out OK. My neighbors would say so.
My oldest didn't listen to a damned thing I said, and she's a college graduate with a full-time job- something in software.
The rest of them aren't grown yet, but I imagine they'll turn out mostly the same way. It's how people in my family turn out.
There may have been a few extraordinary people among us, in either direction, but by and large I think genetics is far more important than what your mom / dad / schools say or do to you. And you probably know your genetics, and your wife's.

My daughter - who is now 24 - has never given me a single solitary problem in her entire life.
My son - 14 - is another story. Every day it's something new with him. He recently discovered vaping and cigars (the cheap gas station variety)

Two boys 2 1/2 years apart. Oldest has a 4.0 through his first year of pharmacy school while being a distance track athlete with year round training. The other just graduated high school early with no desire to go to college but a strong desire to get rich quick. Two completely different personalities and work ethics but overall good kids as far as staying out of trouble and avoiding drugs. Youngest has been much more of a challenge as he has issues with authority.

2 boys/Men ages 28 and 20
Oldest is alpha as hell and is the type who'll say "hold my beer". Didn't attend a 4yr University but did attend a Community College to get his certs in welding.
Started off as structural welder and progressed to working on the pipeline as a welder for 5 yrs. Now is working as a Safety Inspector and is working in TN where Ford is building their new plant.
Youngest is SR in College, at an SEC school and majoring in Civil Engineering. Already landed a job with DOD upon graduation. He too is alpha however he actually thinks things thru, unlike his older brother.
My wife and I are pleased how the 2 turds turned out. They're respectful, responsible, intelligent, handsome, (the oldest, not so much) and both are very honorable men.

Yeah, that was my thought, too. It sounds like a cop-out for bad parents
I will also add:
It is HIGHLY possible for bad parents to take a good seed and ruin it.
It is damned near impossible to take a bad seed and mold it into the paragon of virtue and performance that you might want.

Two girls, two years apart and as different as they can be.
Both have their own homes, careers, families but one is more needy than the other. They've both produced some amazing children though.

Thank you. I am proud of what those young men have become. All productive, the two married ones are good husbands and all three are secure in who they are. I can't ask for much more except I wish I saw them more often. I envy those families who all live within a few miles of one another and stay close.
