Been a few times. Well worth the experience. Watch out for Joey Bagofdonuts.

'Trek' makes it sound like an absolute chore It's really not that bad - M train takes you straight from Midtown, West Village, etc.

Chore, no, but again, if you're staying in Midtown, there are just as good/better steak places within a five or 10 minute walk, depending on where you're staying. M Train from Midtown to Williamsburg is probably closer to 30 mins, give or take.

Again, Luger's is a fine place, I just don't get the hype.

Unpopular opinion - I do not care for 2.25" thick steak cooked with just lightly dusted salt and pepper sitting in a pond of clarified butter. You cannot tell me that tastes better than a steak with a unique rub on it.

Ruth's and steakhouses like Peter Lugar are bland to me.

Went on about 2 weeks ago. This has been a bucket list place for me for quite a while.

The steak is good but not spectacular. The bacon is legit. Cheesecake is very good. Glad I went and checked it off my list but I can easily name several better in Texas and Louisiana. I see no need to go back. So if it is a have to do it thing for you do it. Otherwise I would try somewhere else. It is an experience place now. Reserve early if you go.

Coolest thing was sitting a table over from Rod Martin from the Raiders. Oh and no, never felt like a mob hit was imminent. In a way I felt sorry for the place as it has obviously seen more interesting days.

That does indeed taste better than a steak with a unique rub on it.

Do you not like the taste of beef?

If I'm eating steak, I want to taste beef and flavors that compliment that (typically salt and possibly herbs/garlic).

Assuming a steakhouse is using quality beef, the only real differentiators to me is the atmosphere, wine and sides

Luger is legit if you’re chasing a steak

It's absolutely worth a visit if you've never been. It's the most iconic steakhouse is America (Brooklyn, not the one on LI). The food is legit and it's worth checking the box.

I'd give that to Delmonico's. Too bad the latest ownership ruined it. Opened in 1837, a full 50 years before Luger's.

If you're looking for a mafia feel, try Sparks Steakhouse on East 46th. Paul Castellano was gunned down on the curb right outside the restaurant.

It's also been there forever and has a good atmosphere. The steak is good, too, like so many steakhouses in New York. I prefer Smith & Wallensky's but there are many to choose from.

Agreed on Sparks.

I do think Peter Luger's should be on your list for nostalgia purposes. It is definitely a unique experience that has been around for years. The food is solid. If you are looking for a good steak and do not care about ambiance or nostalgia, there are many other just as good, if not better options mentioned in this thread.

I just found out the couple we are going to NYC with, are going to Luger’s the night before we get there. They are going on company dime. He is a competitive steak chef, and I’m going to wait and see what he says.
He has made (several times) the best steak I’ve ever eaten.

This is the correct answer.

While maybe not the best, if I had never been to NYC before I would not have considered the trip complete without going there

Was just in NYC last weekend. Flew in Friday night and went to Spark’s. At 9:30 it was dead and the service was slow. Good steak, not the best but not the worst.

Went to Luger’s the next day for lunch. Bacon is legit as other posters have mentioned. Steak wasn’t seasoned, like at all. Checked it off my bucket list. Benny the waiter was amazing though. It was $100 round trip Uber from the hotel in Manhattan

Wolfgang’s has a better steak (owner was the head waiter at Luger’s for many years). Pretty much the same menu.

Glad I went to Luger’s but not sure if I’d go out of my way to go back.

Marriott Marquis

I forgot that we took a taxi to Luger’s and it was about $50 then the Uber back was about the same.

I’d stick with Lyft or Uber. The taxi’s are disgusting.

Sort of what I mentioned earlier on the page, but if you're staying in Midtown (i.e. Marriott Marquis) and want to eat at Luger, you're better off taking the M train - faster than rideshare/taxi + price isn't even comparable.

Completely agree. I’m just not a fan of trains and the 5 inch heels made for limited walking/standing. I’m with you though, there are cheaper options than ride share.
