Going to NYC in a month. I wanted to eat at Peter Luger’s, but someone on the travel board said it’s not great, over-priced, and poorly ran.

Any comments from the FDB?

There are too many great steak restaurants in other cities imo to use up a NYC meal at a steakhouse.

I'm sure it's great but I would want to try something different. Not hurting for good steaks where I currently am

I’m talking NYC. Is there better steakhouses in NYC, and PL’s is just a tourist trap?

Luger's is good. It is not a tourist trap.

Powerman is a smart man in telling you to not waste an NYC meal on a steakhouse.

Agreed but the best steak house in BR is Arby’s so you may want to cut him some slack.

Went a few years ago, we could only get a “lunch” time but it was mid afternoon and the portions were exactly the same

The huge bacon strips were good.

The steak was fine. The ambiance was cool. Felt like you’re gonna get whacked eating in there .

A cool experience to say you’ve been there but I had a better steak at smith and wollenksy .

Luger's is good but there are better beef houses in NYC, though depending on how much time you spend there a steak house isn't the best choice as mentioned.

4 other steak houses I can personally recommend:

Gallaghers which is the best I have eaten at in NYC AND of the 4 it is the least expensive but none of these are cheap but if you were considering Peter Luger's it isn't an issue.

Keens

Macelleria which does great steaks and Italian

Porter House

Went a month or so ago.

Good. Is it life changing, no. Will I do it again, maybe.

If someone said they had 5 meals in NYC should they try Peter Luger's, honestly I would say no. Unless, like myself, it was on your list of places to check off.

Honestly, Charlie's in Uptown is better. But, all that said, loved the visit and lunch.

It’s fine. But you can get better steaks in a lot of cities. Don’t waste a meal in one of the best food cities in the world on a steak that’s marginally better than Ruth’s Chris

This is the answer I’m looking for.

I do understand NYC is probably the greatest city in the world for dining. When we were there two months ago, we didn’t have a bad meal, and we ate several different styles of cuisine. The worst meal we had was the bar food at Legends (watching the LSU game) and it was still pretty damn good. Their loaded potato tots was the shite. I’m not talking Sonic tator tots, I’m talking a hand battered ball of mashed potatoes, covered in greatness. Like I said, this was our “worse” meal, and it was damn good.

Don’t get me wrong. Luger’s is good, but it’s not unique.

I am trying to decide if I want to use one of my four dinners at Luger’s.
Someone said earlier it had a mafia feel to it, that you may get whacked at any moment. We ate at De Nico’s in Little Italy (rec from friend who grew up there). It was awesome, including the feeling a mob hit could happen at anytime. There even was a fat Italian man sitting at the back of the restaurant, by himself, with a heavy Brooklyn/Italian accent. Even his name was Tony. We talked with him for a few minutes about New Orleans. He comes down from time to time, to play jazz sax in a band.

Only go for the atmosphere and not for the food experience. Plenty other places that are better. The reputation has taken a hit for not keeping up the good name and great food.

Save yourself the ride. Just go to Wolfgang’s on 33rd. Same bacon & steak quality.

Luger is good, but you're better off going to St. Anselm or DeStefano's if you're in Williamsburg.

I agree with this. I’ve never understood the love for Luger’s. It is good, but there are just as good, if not better, steak joints that don’t involve a trek into Brooklyn (assuming that you’re staying in Manhattan).

Totally worth the visit if you are able to get a table.
