An idiot who stole his father's vehicle, who was already identified is another. A warrant can be issued and the guy picked up later. Lafayette PD will not even chase vehicles for this reason. It's not worth the risk b/c these things usually end in a crash.

NOPd let’s em all flee free

As opposed to the character witnesses employed by LPSO?

The officer is being charged and has been fired.

Now arrested. $100,000 bond too. When multi-felons and murderers are getting lower bonds. Seems excessive.

The Addis police officer who fatally crashed into the vehicle of Brusly High students on Saturday afternoon, during a police pursuit, has been arrested on two counts of negligent homicide and one count of negligent injuring, officials said.

The officer, David Cauthron, 42, was booked into the West Baton Rouge jail on Sunday night, with bail set at $100,000, and was still in jail Monday afternoon, West Baton Rouge Sheriff Mike Cazes said.

That being said, the DA is getting pretty far out there with his quotes to the media. Now the criminal that started this whole thing is just a "young man who took his Daddy's car." He should shut up and prosecute the case.

quote:

"Sirens and police vehicles only give an officer permission to request to cut through a red light," said 18th Judicial District Court District Attorney Tony Clayton. "You must slow down or come to a complete stop when human life is in danger."

"Radio travels faster than the car; the officer could have just radioed ahead that the suspect's car was coming," Clayton added.

"I certainly hope the legislature totally revisits police pursuit laws," Clayton said. "This was over a young man who took his daddy's car."

Real life real crime podcast did a episode on a cold case out of west Baton Rouge where good ole Tony Clayton showed his true colors. He’s acting all by the books here but that case he was far from it.

What should the bond be?

There is a new technology out called Star Chase. The lead police car in a chase gets close enough to shoot a dart into the bad guys car. It has GPS technology that allows the LEO to back off the chase and track the car. This will be pretty standard in Patrol cars 5-7 years from now. 2 of my LEO clients are implementing now.

That is some really cool technology. How much does it cost per unit?

I can see big cities and sheriff's offices implementing this, but places like Addis PD probably won't see this until 2050.

This doofus was probably thinking it was his time to shine, headed up LA1 120 mph thinking he was Bo Duke.

Shame those kids had to pay for their recklessness.

I have never met the guy, but I can promise you he isn't working for Pointe Coupee SO and Addis PD because he is a superstar.

“Lawyer” on wafb said cops can speed, and that they can run red lights but that the cop involved “probably” was wrong for doing both of these.

It absolutely awful that this happened but I’m just thinking the lawyer shouldn’t have spoken about a situation that he’s probably not familiar with.

I’d prefer facts to “probably”.

Prayers for their family and friends.

No, they're not. Limited-chase policies are a good thing. Cops need to be able to pursue, but they also need to have limits as to what may be pursued and who can be involved.

If you want to see pursuits done right, look at Louisiana State Police and Georgia State Police. Both are masters at it. If you want to see pursuits done wrong, look at any small town in the south.

BRPD nailed this pursuit and did a great job. Addis PD should've never left their jurisdiction.

The most exciting thing Addis pd might do is rescue a cat out of the tree
This guy got all adrenalized and lost control
Brpd was in control and following the guy until he finally decided to pull over while not putting others in danger

Why would he speak in definitive terms about an ongoing investigation? He spoke about what the law says and how it is likely applied to this situation as he was asked.

Also, that attorney in particular isn't talking out of his arse.

I think WAFB said they chased him over the bridge at speeds reaching 110 mph.

It looks like they are charging the car their with everything they can, even went from unauthorized use to car theft. Even threw in a home invasion.

I would throw the book at him too, but is it possible they are doing that to make it look like they HAD to try and stop this guy at all costs ?

It's been around for a while. I'm seeing roughly $5k per unit plus about $1k/year for ongoing service. Not bad at all IMO.

The standard units mount in the grille and it has multiple tags ready to fire. Can be launched in the vehicle or via handheld fob (so if they run while the officer is out of the vehicle they can quickly tag them). There is also a handheld launcher which can be used from a boat or of course land or out of a cruiser window.

How do you figure they were in control when they rolled into a different jurisdiction on the other side of the river with one BRPD unit?
