The car jacket was auto charged with manslaughter,I believe, since his actions led to deaths.

That’s absolutely insane. How long has this guy been in law enforcement? What kind of training did he have
One article said less than a year.

He has been in law enforcement longer than a year. He's only worked for the Addis Police Department since February of 2022 though.

Here is the latest on this situation.

They have blood banks set up in different areas if anyone who donates blood wants to donate.

It’s been one of the most difficult things a mother has to endure, losing a child, but in Martin’s case, she’s spending most of her time in the ICU with her son Liam Dunn on top of losing a daughter, Maggie Dunn.
Liam, 20, was the backseat passenger in the car with his 17-yr-old sister Maggie Dunn and her best friend, Caroline Gill, 15. Martin has three children, Victoria, Liam & Maggie, who was the baby.
quote:
Maggie Dunn and Caroline Gill died after they were caught in a high-speed chase over a stolen vehicle from Baton Rouge and hit by Addis Officer David Cauthron on New Year’s Eve. Cauthron is said to have been going nearly 90mph on La1 in West Baton Rouge Parish, with lights and sirens activated but never yielded at the red light where he’s said to have t-boned the car with Maggie, Caroline and Liam in it.
Cauthron has since been arrested and charged with two counts of negligent homicide. District Attorney Tony Clayton said he will still present the case to a WBR Grand Jury.
“I am going to take it before a grand jury to see if there are any additional charges. It’s just protocol because it’s officer involved. We’ve already established a probable cause. By putting it before a grand jury, you get to test the evidence and see what the public thinks of it,” said Clayton. “It doesn’t matter who the perpetrator is, a cop, the da or anyone. We are a nation of laws, not of men. Here, our law appears to be broken and we will let our people in the parish determine if the conduct deviated from the norm.”

LEOs dont learn shite. I went thru Clinton today. Pulled out of a parking lot and a town cop blew by at around 60 plus trying to run a car down. No lights or sirens. Good thing I looked at the last minute.
You would think the LEO would have remembered this story. I almost called it in as a complaint but didn’t.

I seriously don't understand how this is something that has not changed yet.
Ive said on this board years ago, when talking about police chase how police need to find a better way to coordinate police chase.
I gave an example in this thread about one I saw happen years ago that included 6 different departments at max speed in a single file line chasing a motorcycle. Several departments had multiple cars so it was at least 10 cars chasing them. The more cars chasing a suspect the chances of one of them making a mistake goes up, especially if they are from smaller departments that don't have as much training as others.
With that said, I have no idea what procedures are in place. How often accidents are caused from car chases which I should probably do some research on. Police shouldn't be driving like a bat out of hell through traffic going to a car chase. The car chase itself is putting the public on the road in danger and having officers going to it is only increasing danger.

Holy shite!!! I haven’t paid much attention to this story other than acknowledging the sheer tragedy of it and for the fact that I grew up in the area, but just looked at Facebook and realized that the father of the son and daughter and I graduated high school together.
We’re actually friends on Facebook and IRL (not super close, but friends still); shame on me for not realizing this sooner.
He’s a great guy. I’m utterly devastated for he and his family.

WBRZ obtained an edited video of the intersection at the time of the accident. The Addis cop that was involved was the first cat in the chase.

I doubt they will but the parents of the friend that died could also sue the insurance of the driver especially if the police had lights and sirens on

The cowboy from Addis did this independently of the pursuit. He was trying to catch up as it was already out of his jurisdiction, which is allegedly why he was hauling arse.
He was the first car in the chase seen on the DOTD video.

Per WAFB, BRPD terminated the pursuit when the TPOS crossed into West Baton Rouge Parish. Guess they didn’t have shite under control till Tyquell’s stolen vehicle stalled back in Baton Rouge.
You do know there’s a video right?
From the WAFB video, these are the first two cars through the intersection after the wreck:

Those sure look like BRPD cruisers to me.
The first one might have been Brusly PD (I don’t think so, though). The second was definitely BRPD, as were the next 2:

Either 5 or 6 of the 7 police vehicles you can see in the video crossing the intersection after the wreck are BRPD. So yes, they were still in pursuit.
It sounds like the suspect was headed south, then made a U-turn and headed back north. That’s probably how the Addis cop wound up at the front of the chase.

Little different story if he was actually the first car through

Doesn’t “sound” like that. That’s exactly what he did.
So
quote:
yes, they were still in pursuit.
Take it up with BRPD and their spokesman. They’re the ones who said they “terminated” the pursuit when it crossed the parish line. See WAFB quote below:
quote:
Police in Baton Rouge initiated the chase, going after a home invasion suspect in a stolen car. BRPD ended their pursuit after that driver, Zanders crossed the Mississippi River bridge.
Maybe BRPD was just along for the ride. Maybe they didn’t know BRPD gave up the pursuit. BRPD doesn’t seem to know what the hell they’re doing most of the time.
But there’s only one cop responsible for the deaths of the girls and his actions were indefensible.

These two passed after the crash? Seems like they would have stopped to render aid being that the crash was extremely horrible

The first car and one of the later cars stopped to assist.

Right. I brought that up because people were asking how he could have been trying to catch up to the chase if he was the first car behind the suspect. I think the answer is that, when the wreck happened, he had already caught up to the chase because the suspect made a U-turn.

That’s not a quote from a BRPD spokesman. It’s a quote from WAFB. Is there a quote from BRPD saying they terminated the pursuit? Clearly somebody had their facts wrong.
I only brought this up because you seemed to think BRPD wasn’t “in control of the pursuit” as another poster stated. Your reasoning was that they reportedly terminated pursuit at the bridge. But as you can see from the video, they were, in fact, still pursuing the suspect.
