Is the dirty martini still considered controversial?

The only martini I have ever had was the dirty martini with vodka. We made some on Thanksgiving so we were looking up recipes, and I didn't realize that the dirty martini was so reviled by martini purists.
I suppose I will try a non-dirty martini with gin at some point to compare but I suspect I will be disappointed.

And they weren’t pissed about that?

There is your problem. Purists are always a pain in the arse. Just read any gumbo thread on this board. If you don't cook it exactly like someone's MeeMaw, it ain't traditional or Cajun.
The traditional martini is made with gin. However, if you enjoy a dirty vodka martini, drink it. Who is being harmed?

I could drink these until I fall down.

Order it like my friend girl does:
Vodka Martini up. Dirty like a barroom floor at Mardi Gras just off Bourbon Street. Two olives.
Every time she says that it gets a laugh from the bartender.

Love a dirty one with a blue cheese stuffed olive in it

I'll never understand this shite.
Whether someone next to me is drinking a gin or vodka martini, or a damn hand grenade or piss I do not care. That's their preference.
Now, if it was actually piss...I'd probably care more to ask...when was that bottled?

To each their own, but I found dirty martinis to be the equivalent of drinking olive juice straight from the jar. In my drinking days, I would have been one of those snobby martini purists you speak of - only gin and never dirty.
But with that said, who cares what martini purists think? Drink whatever you like, however you like it. And I'm not saying this just to suck up to the man who could otherwise permanently ban from TD!!

I love olives so I like my dirty martinis to be slutty.

I go with gin.
Not dirty, just slightly untidy.

I can recall a poster named Martini that made a fuss about a dirty vodka not being a true “martini”. He sucks though.

I’d drink gin martinis if gin didn’t taste like piss

I take my vodka martini up with blue cheese stuffed olives. Gin on the other hand I like Bombay, filthy and on the rocks. Depends on the mood.

Gin tastes great in certain cocktails but I don't care for it by itself. I like gunpowder gin

We like Gin Mare from Spain for our dirty martini. It's distilled with Arbequina olives (and botanicals) that give it a unique flavor.
I find that the cheaper olives have better brine for making martini, so don't waste money on gourmet olives. I like mine a little dirty, like a Catholic school girl with just a bit of cleavage and a skirt just short enough to reveal the bottom of her bum cheeks.

dirty martini with vodka is the only way. Shaken, not stirred.
But 4 martini floor needs attention.

Dirty martinis aren't my thing, but ignore martini purists. Half of them consider the only true martini to be a pour of gin, up. Because I suppose it makes them feel fancier sipping on a shot of gin if it has a fancy name?
Not worth an extra post, but to those who like alcohol but don't like gin, branch out a bit. Gin is extremely varied. You might be surprised once you get outside of the standard fare.
