if youre even remotely athletic you should be able to pick it up on your first day and be able to ski greens and blues.

I’ve been snowboarding my whole life, but I want to try out skiing next time. I’m nervous to go outside of my comfort zone, but I think it’s probably the smart move at this age and with bringing kiddos on the horizon.

Its not bad. If its your first time, take a 1/2 day class to get the basics and then you will be fine.

I've noticed if you bring kids, they pick it up almost immediately. No fear and no idea of consequences.

I went with the fam about 30 years ago. It was fun. I didn't get very good at it but could fall down and it not really hurt.

Nowadays all I hear about is people who break femurs or hips on the slopes and end up in surgery either somewhere over there or soon after they get back home.

Lean forward in your boots, bend your knees and follow the fall line.

Take at least a day of lessons. You'll appreciate the guidance and not being on your arse all day trying to figure it out on your own.

Also, (at most places) you'll get to cut all the lines by going with the instructor in the ski school line.

First time out about 30 years ago we went to Durango. I took the lessons with no problem. They cut loose to make a run down the easy slope. So I hop on the lift and get ready to become a skier. What they did not tell me was when you get off of the lift you are skiing. I was going to take it all in, then start when I was ready. I went down the slope backwards, on my arse when I wasn’t rolling. I managed to stop, took the skis off and walked down. Put the skis in the rack and never tried again.

If you take a beginer lesson they are usually a couple hours to half day. They'll teach you how to wedge ski like the pic I posted. With thst you can do greens and some easy blues. Hardest part for me at first was getting on and especially off the lifts.

If you've ever water skied you'll probably be more of a natural to it and transition to parallel skiing versus wedge style easier.

If you go to Colorado, winter park is a great place for beginners. Lots of greens. You can go from the top down on greens.

The first time I tried to ski was in Beaver Creek, was with two friends who are good skiers, they tried to give me tips, but they aren't teachers, and I failed miserably.

2nd time was on Sugar Mtn in NC and my gf and I(who also was a beginner) took a 30-45 minute lesson, and "got it." The next day we were all excited to get out there and hit the slopes, and the first run some kid fell right in front of my gf and she wiped out to avoid him and tore her acl. That was probably it for us for a long while.

Not that difficult and it's fun as frick. Skied for the first time when I was maybe 10 and have gone skiing every year for the past 6 years or so.

I'm not in the greatest shape in the world, but outside of your legs being a little sore, it isn't bad. Unless you're like extremely obese will it be a problem.

When you start, just take 1, maybe 2 days of lessons and stick to the greens for the first trip and after that you should be able to fairly easily get the hang of it. I recommend you go out and do it while you still able to.

I taught skiing at a Major resort for close to 20 years.

Here's what I'll tell you. Skiing is like golf. The better you are, the more you'll enjoy it. Roughly, how old are you.

How long does it take to start enjoying it?

Skiing - Enjoying on 2nd/3rd day.
Snowboarding - Enjoying on 2nd/3rd trip. It takes a lot longer to learn and you really, really have to want to do it.
I suggest everyone start with skiing.

If you ever rollerbladed or skated, you can ski.
It'll take a half day as part of a lesson for you to get used to the sliding part of it, and you'll be able to ski all greens and some blues by the end of day 1.

It is a ton of fun!

By day 2 or 3, you'll have enough experience to do almost all blues and some easy blacks.... Especially if you take another lesson.
They're worth the money! There are some improvements in form and some technical aspects that the instructors can just show you, so you don't have to spend the time to learn on your own.
It makes it so much more enjoyable, so much more quickly.

There's a big portion of the state population that goes skiing during Mardi Gras every year. We essentially take over.

Not hard at all if you have any athletic ability.

It depends on how naturally athletic you are. I took a 2 hr lesson on day 1 and was fine rest of trip first time I went skiing.

Now snowboarding….don’t even try that unless you can skateboard

I keep seeing this, but some of the best skiers I know are not very athletic at all.

I'm not sure if there really is a correlation between people that are good at extreme sports, and people that are good at ball sports.

It takes a day or so to get the basics down, but it'll take a season plus to go down scarier routes for most people.

If you haven't polished off a couple of $12 bloody mary's at a mountain top bar at 10am and tried skiing down after, you are missing out on a life experience...riding too high at that point to have fear....That true American freedom there
