Guarantee you Saban saw it and on film. This is the kind of stuff that makes him go ballistic. It wasn't left off his post game arse chewing notes.

don't think there is an "attempted targeting" penalty.

I mean the basic definition of targeting is an attempt in itself.

But the rules also certainly allow a penalty to be applied for intent, especially one where the runner has given himself up feet-first. I have not rewatched the play but it certainly looked like he attempted to drop a forearm as well.

These type of plays are pretty easily distinguished between defender leaping over runner to avoid contact, and the instance that happened on this play where the defender simply missed his target.

He launched himself and his forearm did hit JD in the facemask. Should have been personal foul. What would the call have been if Perkins did that ?

For ask of you saying he missed, go back and look again. Watch Daniel’s head bounce off the turf. It certainly wasn’t the crushing blow it was meant to be but it wasn’t a clean miss either!

Did he though? So what is the rule when a QB starts his slide? Is some contact allowed? If yes, then how much? There was definite contact there that caused Daniels helmet to go back and into the turf.

Whoops. Thought I had it timestamped already. Fixed link.

And fricking KHer says "no flag because the DEFENSIVE PLAYER avoided making contact"!
JD getting prone is what avoided contact!

No targeting call and no review...

What? It was called and reviewed. But, the guy's aim was so bad he completely whiffed on the forearm shiver attempt at JD's head. The ref's explanation was funny. Basically said, "There was no targeting. The player missed."

In all honesty, when this first became a rule, I remember one of our players getting hit with this exact scenario, and being penalized.

Was it also an NFL thing, maybe? Because for some reason, I seem to remember it being in a Texas stadium... maybe Saints-Cowboys, or maybe it was LSU with one of the season openers. Crazy, I remember the venue more than the team, other than it was called against "my" team.

Pass over the middle, WR caught it and went down. Safety flew over him like Superman, but missed. But they called him for "launching at a defenseless player" anyway.

But yeah, in my mind, with the purposed intent of the rule, that was clearly targeting against Daniels, hit or miss. The Bama player was a few yards away and not yet ready to leap, when Daniels slid feet first. The Bama player took another step and then dove at him, when it was clearly unnecessary. That's like diving at a player after he went out of bounds.
I thought it was all about the action and preventing that, regardless of actual contact.

It looked worse in real time, but I was fine with picking up the flag for targeting.

However, I still believe unnecessary roughness/late hit should still be applied. Targeting is the add on that gets a player ejected.

Oddly, there have been hits that were good football plays labeled as targeting by the letter of the rule. Yet, here there is no penalty for what looked like a guy launching himself at a QB sliding that barely missed helmet to helmet contact. In fact, JD used his hand to deflect the shot.

The guy wiffed on Daniels. They can’t eject a guy for intent. If there was contact I think the outcome is different.

Way better explanation than mine.

The guy was fairly still, JD started to slide, he turned and launched at him.

Well. If you miss it isn't targeting b the rules, right?

Correct. But, unsportsmanlike conduct fits the bill just fine.

This is false. In fact, it’s the exact reason that many people don’t like the targeting rule. Most people think that there should be a targeting 1 (without intent) that does not result in an ejection and a targeting 2 (with intent) that results in an ejection. You can’t call a guy for targeting because he tried to spear a RB going down the sideline but whiffed and flew into the benches.

BINGO

The duck quacked again on this play, loudly.

Had this happened to Young, it would have been unnecessary roughing. That is the correct call. The intent was there AND he did make contact. In the NFL, that's a call every time.

Remember, this isn't the first time a Bama player targeted our QB and got away with it. In 2009 there is a picture of bug eyes staring right at Jordan Jefferson getting speared. No call. Of course, we know that game was rigged with the PP INT.

In 2016 Danny Etling slid feet first, only to be decapitated by Ruben Foster. No call again as that would have put LSU in scoring position in a close game. We know that game was also rigged when Hurts should have been called for a safety, and then their only TD occurred when FOUR bama players were holding our lineman on his run. That was also the game where Devin White tapped Hurts on the back out of bounds and they called a penalty.

Don't forget about Devin White being suspended for the first half of the Bama game in 2018 for simply pushing the MSU QB.

Keep denying what you are seeing at your own peril. History keeps repeating itself and many here still deny it.

Target not hit
He targeted him
He just didn't take him out like at Texas.

It was targeting because that's exactly what he did.

It appears the Bama player’s foreman comes across Daniels’ face mask. Right? Wrong?
