Could Bourdain even cook well? He was basically famous because of Kitchen Confidential but I can’t recall ever seeing the guy actually cook. He was always a judge.

He started as a chef.

The episode where he visits Breaux Bridge always makes me insanely hungry.

Was never a fan of Bourdain. Hard to put my finger on it but he had an arrogance that just irritated me.

Taking his own life shows how self absorbed he was.

Anthony Bourdain was one of the most overrated public figures in all of my pop culture awareness. So many of my friends look to him as some kind of modern, retail Svengali - but to me, he just looked like some kind of bitter restauranteur who burned out.

People quote his bullshite on their FB pictures all the time... but nothing that people attribute him saying moves the needle for me. Sorry. He came off as a 60 year old dishwasher who just fell into a lucky position to travel the world.

Never ever ever ever date or marry actresses, models, musicians, influencers, or any other narcissist that believes the world owes them attention.

(Ie don’t date anyone under 30 these days)

Just because you’re a chef doesn’t mean you are great. I guess that was my question. I mean you have Eric Ripert, then you’ve got the Chef a casual eatery.

Watched a 1/2 episode of Parts Unknown before I turned it off. He came across as a huge pretentious a-hole.

Cry me a river you fricking pussy. You sure as hell kept making cooking shows and doing things to stay in the spotlight. You were a weak, frail, insecure pussy who took his own life in the ultimate act of selfishness. Good riddance.

Oh and that’s why your girlfriend cheated on you, loser.

Am I missing something about why some of you are so angry at Bourdain? The vitriolic responses have been really, really bizarre.

Tough crowd in this thread.

I'm a Bourdain fan. His shows inspired me to travel to several places I'd have never imagined going to. I've read a lot of his stuff and he was very open about his demons. He knew he was living on a razor's edge between happiness and utter despair. He would bust his own balls for being such an insufferable a-hole in some aspects of life and a pussy in other aspects of life. He was pretty open about being a terrible partner and father, and he couldn't explain it as his upbringing was very normal by his own admission. If the Roadrunner documentary is to be believed, Argento was the straw that broke the camel's back.

I liked his Kitchen Confidential book.

But other than that, I didn't care to listen to the man. He came across as a total arrogant frick and know it all. The only things good in the world was the stuff he liked. A superior, foodie intellectual. Does it get any worse than that?

Yep, I always appreciated his candor. Some have called him arrogant or pretentious, but I’ve found him to be exactly the opposite. He was open about his failures, demons, and brokenness, but not in a braggadocios way at all. Just vulnerable and self deprecating, which I found refreshing.

I liked the show and I periodically liked AB, but yeah, I could never got on board with the deification of him.

He was a guy many portrayed as asking the big questions on life, etc., but to me that part of the persona always seemed thin and cover for his demons. And he did it while poo-pooing the ways that a lot of people anchor themselves (successfully) - God, traditionalism, etc. - while it's obvious that he was untethered and suffering.
