Will probably need to be put on a transplant list. That will be determined by his meld score..

Sorry man. It’s not good. If it’s alcohol related, he won’t get a transplant most likely. I’d say it’s probably 50/50 he makes it a year. And that’s if he does it all right from here.

I’ll say a prayer. Again, so sorry for your whole family

Possibility of getting a transplant if he's healthy enough to survive, but you'll have to consult with a specialist to see if he's a candidate.

He'll likely start to get really weak too as his ammonia levels climb, and probably need to take lactulose which will make him have bad stomach problems. The ammonia is released through the crap.

I have a family member who contracted Hep C from a blood transfusion in the Army. It destroyed his liver, but he was the first person in the state to be prescribed Harvoni which cured him. He went on to have a transplant and is still kicking today. He goes to work every day.

A bad liver is a unique set of health issues. It can mess with your mind and everything else when your numbers go haywire. A transplant is worth it if you can get him to that point. If he wants it.

It is a hell of a fight.

You can get one but have to be sober for a long time

Yep. There are hoops to jump through even without the alcoholism.

I am very sorry to hear this and will pray for your brother. Stage 4 cirrhosis is about as bad as it gets but a transplant is a possibility. The five year survival rate after a transplant is about 75%.

Lactulose can help extend your life on it, but you end up taking it several times a day, and it really upsets your stomoach. You end up running to the toilet all day.

If it is truly stage 4 the liver has failed and not going to heal. Our livers are amazing, and your liver tissue can regenerate but when you get to stage 4 start looking into getting comfortable end of life.

Now, I find some doctors may exaggerate their staging in things like this. I don't know if it is to put the fear of God into someone or what other motive they may have. The panels and testing clearly puts things in another category and they go with the most extreme options... but it is always the doctors call in the end on what they call it. Looking at liver panels over time would be hugely helpful, and any imaging they have done on the liver.

This underscores the importance of blood work every 6 months; especially for people that drink more than 6 drinks daily.

I’d also add that if approved to receive a transplant, inquire about being on multiple list. The requirements are distance based so more densely populated regions have more opportunities..

My father received a transplant and it gave him 7 more years..

ETA..He also needs to have a endoscope done to check for varices..

Man, oh man.....Lactulose....whew!

My cousin took it for over three years. He carried two spare pair of underwear in his car at all times. He used them, too.

Even with it, your ammonia levels can get out of hand. Several times he ended up in the ER out of his mind.
