yes, been a serious drinker for years. he’s been sober now for about 4 months but the damage has been done.
Had a high school PE/health teacher who was diagnosed with it during the school year. He never came back after the diagnosis and passed away before the end of the year. It's not a good prognosis, to be completely honest.
Praying for your brother.

My dad died at 34 from alcohol induced cirrhosis.

Uncle had liver cirrhosis around age 60. Mean drunk bastard.
I was youngish when it happened so I don't have the full details, but if I remember correctly they had to drain his abdomen and some other serious shite. I don't think he was stage 4. He quit drinking completely, lost a ton of weight, and now sits at his house watching television and doing puzzles. He's a perfectly pleasant guy now, too.
Alcohol is poison. Drink if you will, but know what you're doing. Some people just can't moderate.

I got a new liver 6 months ago from cirrhosis. I've heard of a Meld score, never anything about "stages".

I have several friends that had the transplant surgery....it is the only solution to a dead liver.

What kind of crowd do you hang around that you know "several" people who needed a new liver?

34 years old my gosh
Yeah. I was 5. Sad deal. Drank shite loads of vodka, every single day. Plus family history of weak livers. His mom died from it. His sister died of it.
Needless to say, I am careful about how much I drink. Drink socially, but no more than twice a week. And I have my liver checked yearly.

my brother was just diagnosed with stage 4 cirrhosis of the liver. He is to see a specialist next. how bad is this? he’s only 45. im in shock. anyone got any hopefully stories?
Had a very good friend who died of cirrhosis. Its a horrible death. Not going to sugar coat it for you. Stage 4 is likely irreversible barring a transplant.

Not much good from that

4 is bad.
That he quit drinking is good.
Like a smoker with COPD who quits. The damage may be done but it’s always better to stop continued damage.
Anyone with him? He will need supervision.
Supervision in that if ammonia levels creep up. He may get confused. It sneaks up on patients. Kind of like blood sugar. Before they know it they are too confused to know to ask for help.
Sorry.

There still is hope though if you see the right doctor.

Sorry man. It’s not good. If it’s alcohol related, he won’t get a transplant most likely. I’d say it’s probably 50/50 he makes it a year. And that’s if he does it all right from here. I’ll say a prayer. Again, so sorry for your whole family
This is all ridiculous. I’m not gonna read all this thread, but I know what I’m talking about. Most people with cirrhosis live for years and years and die of something else. Those that need a transplant almost always get one if they are compliant with their doctors recommendations. Of course, it helps to have good insurance. For alcoholics, abstinence for six months is plenty to get transplanted, but exceptions are made all the time for less abstinence than that. You only get a liver transplant if you’re getting really sick, though, which is not most cirrhotics.

Also, there’s no such thing as stage 4 cirrhosis. Stage 4 FIBROSIS just means you have cirrhosis. There’s a lot of bad advice in this thread from people who are pretending they know what they’re talking about.

Took my dad at 57. It’s a crapshoot. Time to reprioritize life.
