What happens when I go out to eat Mexican and have a margarita or two and my car doesn’t let me drive home?

No way this could possibly go wrong

How about we just increase penalties/enforce the current laws and systems in place.

It would also pick up mouthwash as well.

ETA: Honestly a little surprised so many down voters support drunk driving.

The average OT poster is against drunk driving unless they're the one actually doing the drunk driving, then its ok.

How about we just put harsher laws in place for people that do drink and drive? I know someone whose had 3 DUIs and still has a license. I know an another dude who literally drove through a Taco Bell and barely had any repercussions.

I believe in freedom over tyranny. I despise drunk drivers but dammit being free has its risks.

The National Transportation Safety Board is recommending that all new vehicles in the U.S. be required to have alcohol monitoring systems that can stop an intoxicated person from driving

Ignition interlock devices are for people with multiple DUIs

Let's leave it that way

Self driving vehicles are right around the corner. Now isn't the time to require vehicles to have unnecessary equipment that makes them more expensive. They cost enough as it is

M.A.D.D. has been asking for "Zero Tolerance" towards driving under the influence, anything over .01 BAC would result in a DUI.

MADD "Zero Tolerance" and you lose your kids

Great point. Why don't we just put everyone in jail because some people will commit crimes.

Imagine this tech being in place in 2020.

Instead of cutting your car off if it smells alcohol, the government enforces a non-travel ban on the unvaccinated by cutting off your car until you get the jab. You know, for the good of the community.

If you don’t think our government overlords won’t abuse this power once they have it you have zero sense of history.

What if you don't drink at all? Why should you have to pay more for this device to be installed in your vehicle by default?

Out of over 400,000,000,000 vehicle trips every year, there are over 40,000 fatalities....in other words 0.00001% of vehicle trips are fatal. Of that 0.00001%, a leading cause is indeed drunk driving. However, is the best solution to create an active interference in each and every one of the 400billion+ vehicle starts in the USA?

Now, the other thing the NTSB wants to do is a nationwide lowering of the DWI limit to 0.05% vs. 0.08%.

Combine that with the ignition interlock...you better be at 0.03% or below to make sure any calibration drift doesn't keep your vehicle from starting.

In effect, this will criminalize Bob and Nancy for grabbing a bottle of wine at a nice anniversary dinner.

Meanwhile, Jim-Bob in his 1988 Ford Pickup still gets wasted and plows into a family of 4 killing them all, not learning his lesson on his prior 3 DWI's.
