House of the Dragon has a queer problem

It just ain't gay enough Says GQ, a magazine that presumedly was once for straight men. . . And when they do have the gayzes, dey murders em
quote:
Later episodes will no doubt have to reckon with the aftermath. But for the meantime, to introduce a rare couple of queers to the series, only for one of them to be dispatched, quickly, in visceral fashion, leaves an awful taste. After all, it's not the first time that queer characters have been introduced simply to face their ghoulish, bloody demise. Thrones' treatment of gays has been a long-standing point of debate.
As Vulture's Brian Moylan wrote of the Game of Thrones season six finale back in 2016, “gay characters on Game of Thrones have met especially bloody and ignominious deaths”. He notes the shadow monster assassination of Hot King Renly, the head-smashing execution of big-B Bisexual Oberyn Martell (Pedro Pascal), and Loras, not only put through the worst conversion therapy known to man at the hands of religious zealots but A-bombed in the attack on the Sept of Baelor by would-be queer icon Cersei Lannister (Lena Headey). The manner of their deaths is appropriate for the franchise's unrelentingly bleak tone, but it's troubling that gay characters are still relegated to devices demonstrative of darkness.
Laenor's queerness presumably isn't going anywhere, so his characterisation has plenty of room to breathe. But it nevertheless feels outdated to embrace the tropes of the past, not least in a media era where renewed focus has been placed on robust explorations of queerness. The Celluloid Closet, film critic Vito Russo's long critique of queerness in the media, was published over four decades ago, as Stephen M Hornby noted in The Conversation as the original series was coming to a close. “[Russo] noted a trend in some film representation where the gay man is presented only to meet an unhappy, punishing and often fatal ending,” he writes, also evoking US academic John Clum's analysis of the trend on stage as “ritualistic purgation”.
It's not just the gays that get the short end of it in the world of Game of Thrones, but it's unsettling that, even in 2022, a roomful of writers might still default to the same trope.

This tweet from Sunday night sums up that entire article.

Says GQ…
Wait, when did GQ go gay??

This is why we have threads that go 50 pages with nothing but arguing about representation in movies/tv
It's never enough for these people

No gay needed. They all die horrible deaths. That's part of the story.

If he got killed for being gay, these people might have a point. He was beaten to death by a psycho to whom he was making dire threats by implication. DWI.
Other than that, I can think of numerous films etc. in which the gays turn out just fine. I think this writer is probably still butthurt over Braveheart or something.

Maybe I'm just showing my age here, but it blows my mind that there are apparently people who sit around watching TV shows and thinking to themselves, "Where are the dudes sucking other dude's dicks? Goddammit, I can't get into the story if there aren't enough dudes sucking other dude's dicks."

Gay, straight or indifferent, they kill off everyone in hideous ways. The LBGoTHoD people deserve no special treatment.

Someone please tell this asshat blogger that it’s an adaption from GRRMs book. The character gets killed in the source material…if you’ve got a problem with it then go write your own epic fantasy and build it up to a point where HBO wants to adapt it. Then u can call the shots.

These dumbass articles are just as dumb as those incel YouTube channels whining about everything is woke

Bad feeling this show is about to fall off a cliff. We’re losing Milly Alcock who’s done a great job as Rheanyra, like her or not, we’re getting Olivia Cooke as the adult Alicent which means she’ll be the dominant character going forward and the woke stuff is just beginning.

Guess they don't know that the gay guy who was killed Sunday night was also killed in the book by the same person.

It’s never enough for some people, it’s a great show, yet people still feel the need to nitpick it to death. Enjoy it and stop bitching about every little thing that upsets you, or do the world a favor and don’t watch it.

Because homosexuality isn’t exactly desirable to normal people and kids, so we need to treat them as positively as we can in movies and pop culture to help groom another generation of homosexuals?

Yeah, the AV review whined about the same thing

why don't these people ever read the source material? Princess and the Queen is a very short story. not even a story but account written down by a maester. Laenor Velaryon is full blown fairy. his wife is banging a kingsguard and has kids with him, spoiler alert they don't look like him and have brown hair.
the violent event that talked about here does happen in the story.

Yup, definitely something me and my friends debate regularly lol.

Wait, Cersei was supposed to be gay? Now this is a scene I would like to see.

Tell me about it. I remember sitting down with my children to watch Game of Thrones every Sunday (I want them to be cultured), and it was particularly difficult to get through the usual tropes of children being burned alive, getting thrown out of windows, raped by pedophiles, committing suicide, and smashed by zombie giants.
Children are always getting the short end of the stick in these shows.
