When I visited my grandparents in Tullahoma, Tennessee, my grandpa would take me to an old school barbershop like that. I'm showing my age here, but that was an era when men would typically wear suits and read the newspaper, have a cigar or cigarette and a cup of coffee while they waited for their cut and shave. I remember it vividly, especially the smell of cigar smoke, coffee, and powder.

This makes me sad. Rick, the biker barber, was my go to guy when I went there.

Dammit. No more Hank Williams rebel flag?

I hated being forced to get haircuts
Yep. When I was going to school there was a pretty strong dress code going on. I was at Chalmette High from fall of 65 to spring of 70 when I graduated and they were pretty strict on things like hair length back then.
Couldn't be over your ears, past your shirt collar, no sideburns past the bottom of your ear lobe, etc.
Was told more than a few times a year to get a haircut before coming back to class by Tommy "Bumper" Warner who patrolled the halls looking for offenders of the dress code back then.
Other rules were:
Pants with belt loops required a belt if your shirt was tucked in.
All shirts with tails had to be tucked in. Pullover dress shirts with square bottoms could be worn outside the pants.
No T-shirts allowed except at P.E.
No tennis shoes or open toe shoes. Slip-ons or lace up only.
No facial hair at all.

When I was in college, I had to find another barber that was in town.
I went to one that the old guy, old style shop and he sat on a stool next to the chair because his back was messed up. He was a vet too. Either army or marine.
I was used to telling my barber back home to “cut it pretty short” and he knew what I meant. I guess I was thinking that was common barber language.
I told this guy that I wanted it pretty short and he ran a #3 right through the center of my head and then asked “is that short enough?”
The answer was of course “yea. That’s short enough”

No more rebel flag, iIrc. All the paraphernalia from the 1991 gubernatorial election is gone, too. The boxing and mobster photos are still there.
Mel still uses the middle chair.

Rene Daigle used to cut hair there at Bocage. One of the finest and sweetest men ever.

I still get my hair cut by an old fashioned barber. It’s more than five bucks. Barbers gotta make a living. He uses a shaving cream machine, straight razor and warm towel. Straight razors take replacement blades. They don’t strop them anymore.

Harry’s Bungalow Barbershop in Midcity NOLA
Harry had a shake in his hands the last few years, but he also had Penthouse mags and low prices. I never saw him without a lit menthol cigarette in his mouth. He was across Alexander St from the Banks Street Bar.
Steve’s Barbershop in the NOLA CBD
Hot foam shaves and decent prices. Used to go during my lunch hour when I worked on Poydras.

30 years ago I went to a shop for a 5 buck hair cut. Clippers attached to a vac hose to catch clippings, not a flowbee, but it just caught the clippings.
Then hot shave of neck and trim of sideburns. Then a quick shoulder massage with a vibrating thing strapped to his hand.
In and out in about 5 minutes, I went every week or two.
Could leave there and head to where you were headed feeling like a million bucks.

Sadly, Charlie Tramonte has retired...great guy. His dad cut my hair when I was young next to Joe D's on Jefferson Hwy.
