I hated being forced to get haircuts

The Golden Shears on Magazine Street in NOLA is like that. The old timers there were 80 years old twenty years ago.

1970s and 80s, B&N barber shop, corner of Jewella and Lakeshore, Shreveport, long gone

In high school I used get my haircuts at a place on Kable Dr. in Algiers. Mr. Hulen.

Any of you baws remember when you could get a cut for under five bucks.
I actually remember them cheaper than that, but I'm old, so there's that.
After my first barber died I wound up going to Jerry Pelligrini's shop when it was on LeBeau St. in Arabi and he was still boxing and barbering back then. Jerry recently passed and I believe his son Kerry is manning the shop now down in Chalmette.
He'd cut my hair then lather up the back of my neck, break out the straight razor and give that area a good shave to clean up the lines.
After graduating high school in 70 I just got into the habit of cutting my own hair and have been doing so ever since----with the exception of a once in a blue moon trip to a barber shop.
Last barbershop I went to closed down after Katrina destroyed it and the owner moved his business to Metairie. If I remember right, a haircut around 05 was still under $10.

My dad used to take me to Joe’s barber shop near LSU to get a flat top every month.
My dad used to take me there. It was a who's who of LSU and elected officials going in and out of those chairs. I remember seeing Woody Dumas, Press Maravich, and Joe Dean in there at times.
Joe, the owner would cut dad's hair, and Mr. Gene, who hated kids would cut mine, cussing like a sailor and generally being unpleasant all the while. Good times!

We have multiple in my town. Couple of them are still old timers just cutting until their hands can't anymore. Everyone walks out with the same haircut. Also have a younger guy doing traditional haircuts in a men's barbershop. You not seeing anything for $5 anymore, but unless I was getting my head shaved, I don't think I want a $5 haircut.

Joe was my grandfather by marriage. I never let him near me with a razor because he thought I wasn't good enough for his granddaughter. He ran one of the best sports betting operations in BR. I was honored anytime he let me answer phones on busy weekends. Probably talked to many of you baws back in the day.

The old era barbershop was the forerunner of the internet.

Until I started shaving my head at home, I went to W Napoleon Barber shop in Metry. Home of the $7 dollar haircut, and full of old crusty dudes with tons of life advice.
Barney, that cut is now up to $17.00
Mel is by himself. Joe DaBarber died about five, eight years ago. Rick died a few months ago, he quit, first to go work somewhere else, then died.
Mel is starting to shake a little.
Joe's common-law wife still owns the business, they've cleaned up quite a bit since Joe died. All the liquor is gone (insurance liability,) and they took down most of the "decorations."
Still a good cut, though.

There was a barber shop on Magazine st. near Napoleon named Luke's Tonsorial Parlor. It looked interesting as a kid. Later I found out a school friend was a regular customer and he had the worst looking bowl cut. He tried to cover it up by parting it down the middle. It was so bad that we called it the penis cut.

They have a 95 year old barber in Kenner still only charging $12. I haven't been in a few years. Most are closer to $30 now.
Claude's barber shop. Claude Toledano was the barber.
Probably one of the last places you can get a hair cut from a WW2 vet.

Dearmans was the best. I had an acct. there and they would send bill to my parents when I was a kid. We would ride up there all the time and get cheeseburgers (amazing) and their shakes.

Mr. Jack’s Barber Shop on the 100 block of Decatur.
Went get a cut from Mr. Ed there once a month for almost 2 decades, up until I permanently moved away 4 years ago. Was still old school.
ETA: But holy shite just looked them up and see it’s ‘permanently closed’ per Google. Wonder if Ed or Jack passed away. Ed was having some health problems and had back surgery. He had a house out in Kenna bruh by lake town/ Yenni Blvd and would always invite me to go throw some lures in the lake and drink an ice chest of cold ones.
