There's still a barber shop there, but it is no different than the one in the movie franchise "Barbershop", black owned and operated for several years now.

Not me. The only place I wanted to go after a visit to the barber shop was home to take a shower to get those little prickly hairs off my shoulders that itched like hell.

I went to W Napoleon Barber shop in Metry. Home of the $7 dollar haircut

Mel raised the price to $13-16 now. Plus, he's the only one left so he hired a female friend to work off and on.

Mel was cutting my hair the day he walked out. Mel was like "let's take this outside," they spoke briefly outside and that was the last time Rick was there. Rick also drank a 2 liter of mountain dew every day so I'm not surprised about his health.

TZimme, I thought I heard Mel and another patron discussing that the last time I was in there. I have never seen her....now that I exercise my mind, I seem to remember me own son mentioning her.

You know the rules.

I haven't seen her, but I also have gone back in a few months. Mel definitely has a shaky hand now so that straight razor had me a little nervous

I am telling you, that vac hose connected on the back of the clippers kept it all off of you. It was great, went right up into the ceiling.

Claude's barber shop. Claude Toledano was the barber.

Probably one of the last places you can get a hair cut from a WW2 vet.

Yup. Spent most of my youth and a good portion of my young adult life.

By about 30 I was losing the battle on my hair and just started shaving it of myself with a pair of clippers and have done that ever since.

It's been so long since I've been to a barbershop I didn't know vacuumed clippers were a thing.

I'm not so old that electric clippers weren't being used, but they also used scissors and a real straight razor that had to be stropped to hone before using it. Now they use ones with disposable blades---which is better for sanitary and health reasons I suppose.

Ive never seen them anywhere else. This was Terrys Barbershop in Monroe, probably around 1990.

He was a hot shave, straight razor guy. My current barber is with a bunch of women and a couple still use the straight razor. The real new ones use a safety razor.

I used to go to a barbershop in a strip mall on Robert E Lee and Paris. Might have been called Sal’s. They had about 4-5 barbers there. Some of the barbers actually wore ties. There was one barber who would call out for you as soon as you walked in the door if he was close to finishing with another customer. That dude operated on volume and not quality of cuts. I hated when I was stuck with him cutting my hair.

All-American Barbering in Broussard. I highly recommend it for anyone in that area looking for that old barbershop experience.

Straight razors take replacement blades. They don’t strop them anymore.

That reminds me: when we were evacuated to Orange Beach for Ida, I'd forgotten to pack my head shaver, and my hair was getting a little out of control.

I went to a local barber shop called the Beach Barber. The barber used what looked like a ceramic straight razor. He moved that razor so fast over my head I thought there was no way he wasn't slicing me all up.

Surprisingly, he didn't leave a nick on my head. Probably the best head shave I've ever had.

He was diabetic, to boot. Don't forget the heaters. Mountain Dew, diabetes, and heaters...Mel told me Rick always said he wouldn't make it much past 50, and he didn't. He was 53 I recall?

Wasn't he also a recovering alcoholic? A buddy said he had recently fallen off the wagon.

My great uncle had a barbershop in Athens when I was at UGA. I used to go get a cut there and listen to him tell old stories.

He originally cut hair in the military so no matter what you told him you got a buzz cut. None of this “a little off the top and taper the sides” bullshite.
