Any of you baws remember when you could get a cut for under five bucks. Used to have this old timer in Shreveport back in the day. He was a marine during WW II. Only charged five bucks but you didn't have many options. He still shaved you with a straight razor and warm shaving cream. Had so many interesting stories.
One time he had a heart attack and was back cutting hair a few days later. Mr Johnson was his name. RIP and Semper Fi.

Used to get a haircut at a place like that in Bocage. Now you have to have some non-binary letter person cut your hair

I remember Phil was a barber in Baton Rouge that like to gamble on the horses.
He started out in NBR, the at a shop off Monterey Blvd, and then finished up at a Barber shop in the Broadmoor shopping center.
Old School Barber shop and the big game of the week back then was either LSU/ Tulane or LSU/ Ole miss.

What are the chances he bothered to sanitize the straight razor back then.

I used to get the 7 dollar St. Louis side walk special with a slick back and a fonky front.

Yep…in the mid-80’s in Nashville, TN I used to go to a shop like that. I usually walked in and had to wake the barber up because he was always sleeping in the barber chair when I walked in.
One time the power went off just as I was sitting down to get my cut. He wanted to cut my hair with no lights in the place!

Iam Still here so I guess he did. But that's not you had to worry about. If he was having a slow day, you would be in his chair for an hour. Think he would get lonely. That's all he did for 14 hours a day. After awhile the damn clippers were hot as hell. Sometimes you might get your ear cut a little. Was always no charge if he did that lol. Paid him anyways.

The last time I was in a barbershop like that it was 2 bucks and my old man would give me 35¢ for a tall boy Chocolate Soldier out of the pull door Pepsi machine.

There’s still one near me. Not 5 dollars but it’s old school. Old man in a small shop

Had a guy like this at one point. His name was Mr Woodruff. No scissor cuts and not too many options. Great guy and Korea vet. Ended up taking his life after second diagnosis of testicular cancer. May have been the saddest death I’ve known about for somebody I only saw once ever 6 weeks.

While it cost more than $5, there is still an old school barber shop close to me. I actually grew up getting my hair cut there.
To this day this is where you go to in order to find out the following:
- Who will win local elections
- Where the fish are biting.
- Who won the board money for the LSU and Saints game.
- Who is running around on his wife and whose wife is running around on them.
- A recipe for just about anything.
- To hear who has to say what about what sports team.
- Anything else going on.
But its going to get harder and harder to find these type of places. The guy who owns it now bought it from the guy who opened it back in the 50s. He guy who owns it started working under that guy. Between the old man and him, they covered 3 generations. Evidently parents don't take their kids to those types of places anymore and there really isn't enough to bring in a younger barber so when this guy is done.. That's it.
With that said, where do people bring their kids to get haircuts?

Go to see Dickie by Monjunis.
He'll fit the bill.

There was one in Forest Hill south of Alexandria. His name was Bob and everyone called "Butcher Bob". He charged $3 and you definitely got your money's worth. Included the straight razor shave that he would sharpen with a big leather strap hanging from the chair. He had a handlebar mustache that he would curl up on the end. Good times back in the day!

Anyone ever go to the old school barbers in the LSU Union? They used to do a kick arse flat top.

Algiers Halie’s barber shop on metairie road is like that. Old school.

I used to go to a barber shop next door to the VA.
Both barbers were old WWII vets. One of them would give you a high and tight no matter what you asked for
TYFYS and RIP to both of them
Eta: these guys also used straight razors to clean up your sideburns and neck.

I was just talking to my wife how a haircut from the barber was only $7 as a kid. I'll never forget getting haircuts there. Was a small shop in Kerrville and was a father and son. Think the son ended up killing himself not long after his dad died back in the late 90s. I remember my mom dropping me off for a haircut on mother's day. He gave me my money back to go buy a mother's day card since I hadn't bought one.
Grapevine has a good barber shop at least.
