I joined the Air Force in 1990 and stayed active duty til 2004. 2004 til 2022 been an Art ( Acive Reserve Techician) and have accumulated 7183 points towards retirement. It takes 7200 to retire with an active duty retirement. I was notified today that from here on out I'm pay no points. If I retire in October I will receive 4.7k at 56 years old. I'm 49 and will be 50 in December. If I stay one more year I will receive atleast 4.9k a month without pay raises. I'm a CMSgt. E9.
I already hate the way the military has been headed for atleast 15 years.

I have a masters in Aviation Management but don't really know how the civilian world works. Should I stay the extra year?

BTW no kids just me and the Mrs. Whom is also retired Air Force.

Ask yourself, Is it worth $200 more a month for rest of your life to with one more year? Probably more like $175 after taxes.

If I am reading this correctly it seems like the best move is to stay one more year.

Had a bud that retired out after 30 years as a chief. Got a really sweet gig maintaining drones in Africa
Four months on, four off. Stupid money

Be done with it would be my friendly advice. You can make an extra $200 per month with myriad choices. Live life and be happy when you're 56.

If you do not have a plan on what to do after, I would stay another year and make that plan.

My Father (Army) retired after 32 years at 50 years old and was a CSM (E9). He probably spent the next 5-7 years trying to figure out what to do with his life.

He eventually found happiness post Army, but it took some time.

Ask Peej his opinion and then do the exact opposite.

That should work out for you well.

Former ART here. Are you still a traditional reservist? Is Sanctuary an option?

Edit: Sanctuary isn't worth what you'll get in retirement. Put that Av Management degree to work. There is plenty of opportunity out there.

A family member with a faulty heart valve made sure she stayed in the Reserve long enough for the associated insurance to cover she and her immediate family for the rest of her life. By the time the expensive valve replacements needed to be done, she didn't even pay deductibles. (Sadly I know this because the operations didn't work and we ended up as her estate representatives. I was impressed at how litter her last months ended up costing.)

I'd be curious to read an explanation of this. Just looking at the words, I interpret it to mean "you can stay in the Air Force (Active) Reserve, and we'll pay you, but you won't accumulate any more 'points' toward retirement."

Trying to parlay that into massive Yankee dollars seems like the obvious play. The cultural difference is real, though.

IDK if you ever thought about becoming a Command Chief, but the type of BS you'd have to deal with in the corporate world is probably similar to that. That is my wild-arse guess.

200/mo for 12 mos = extra 2400/year. I would stay. 2500 for 20 years is 48000 dollars.

But you will get that cushy government COLA every year, which is equivalent to most private industry employees "raises".

I simply cannot fathom how anyone could struggle with retirement. To have money and free time is the whole point of life.

Personally I’d stay the extra year and figure out what you want to do when you finally get out.

I would stay the year.. But use that year to figure out what you want to do.. Your timeline to figure it out is set..
