people can be homeless for a variety of reasons. do i feel bad for all of them, no. certainly some.
mental illness, disability, substance abuse problems with no idea how to get help, even just down on their luck.
its easy to say go get a job in this economy. a lot of places that are big corp wont hire you unless you have a permanent address or if your lucky some type of partial address. most mom and pops wont hire you because of the stigma.
It is a lot tougher hole to dig yourself out of than most people think. i dont know what the answer is but just saying its their fault isnt entirely true at all in most cases.

Similar happened to bleeding heart ex-wife. She'd give money to these panhandlers everyday where she got off the interstate. I told her she was being played. One day she came home and said she stopped doing it. Asked why and she said she had seen them getting on a tricked out Harley that was parked in a nearby parking lot.

I do, but not for the reasons they might think.

quote:BS - I'm trying to find the article from last week where a Louisiana man lived homeless in SanFran and he received $650/month from the state + $200/mo in food stamps. He said it was the easiest money he's ever made and all it took was a phone call to get it. He lived in a tent city and said he had Prime & Netflix on his cell phone...so why should he seek work?
Regardless of how they may have ended up in that situation living on the street is a desperate way of life and a sign that someone has just given up control.

I don't at all.

I used to feel different about each of them depending upon how they approached me. I have given some a few bucks. The regulars are the ones that bother me. I pray for them now.

No. Anyone that feels sorry for them is a fricking moron.

I know I'm supposed to care, but I have ZERO sympathy for people who choose to drink and/or drugs themselves into a stupor each and every day.
I gladly help those in a tough situation, but when the person really doesn't want help then I'm out.
May sound cold, but I prefer to put my money and effort into something that will actually help. Giving so much as a penny to a homeless junkie is a wasted penny.

Nope. Most are rude and act like you owe them.
A while back several of them walked into an associate's place of business off Siegen demanding they give them their Wifi password because 'they needed it'.

the ones that are clearly having some kind of psychotic episode, yes. The able bodied people, who a lot of time look pretty clean and healthy, no.
This. I have a hell of a lot of sympathy for tattered homeless people who clearly have issues than I do for a random dude dressed normally stalking me in the parking lot at night.
The people who have the nerve to approach a woman (or worse - a woman and her baby/child) who is alone make my blood boil. I had a man scare the shite out of me approaching me one night in the Neighborhood Walmart lot and following me with his sob story all the way up to the doors of the store.

The folks in the cities who are clearly mentally ill or so hooked on drugs or alcohol that they're barely still human, yes, I feel bad. I don't often give them much, if anything, but it's still sad to see. These are the folks who are literally unemployable without a shite ton of treatment, be it for addiction or mental health.
The folks standing outside the Walmart or near grocery stores in my small-ish town? Those folks just piss me the hell off. Dude, you're like maybe 30 years old, appear healthy (healthy to stand out in the heat and beg) and able to work. Clearly employable people out begging with their pitiful signs of desperation. Irks me to no end and I will NEVER give those folks a dime, a wave, or even a smile.

You wouldn't feel sorry for someone who was a victim of the foster care system who tossed them out on streets at 18 with no life skills? What about ones that come from dysfunctional parents that failed to provide guidance and only doled out neglect and abuse? Not a little bit sorry?

When I was younger my gf gave 2 guys $20 b/c she felt sorry for the lab that was with them. That night we went to a bar about a block from where they were begging. I noticed a lab tied to a column outside the bar...sure enough they were playing pool and drinking beer
