I’ve wondered if that quote that’s attributed to him about having black people “voting for Democrats for 200 years” is actually his quote. I’d like to know the context behind it.
I’m not saying it’s not true but we obviously didn’t learn that in History class. I’ve also never bothered to research it but half the shite quoted on the internet are poached quotes or fragmented quotes from a larger conversation. Maybe I should finally look it up because if this was his plan, it worked beautifully. He must have been evil more so than a horrible President. He was definitely effective.

it was made in context of the great society social welfare programs. from what i know of him, i would be more surprised if he didn't actually say it.

No entity should be making money off of the government, thus not giving nothing in return in the process of endorsing a political candidate. That's what's happening when tax exempt entities take contributions and turn around and use it to promote a candidate.
Furthermore, you've now made donating to a candidate a tax deductible contribution. The churches would become defacto SuperPACS. Wealthy people on both sides can now contribute massive amounts, deduct the amounts, further reducing tax revenues and ballooning the deficit. "Churches" pop up everywhere as merely a front for superPACS and candidates. Moreover, the division between religion and state becomes even smaller.
