Looking for recommendations on a bolt action rifle.

Trying to decide on my next purchase. Originally I was thinking an 870 wingmaster, but I do already own a 12g over/under and I shoot fine with it. So I’m thinking I should get a rifle.
I don’t really own a long rifle. I have a Ruger 10/22 but that’s it.
Thinking of getting something in either 308 Win. or .30-06 Springfield.
I enjoy upgrading and adding to my guns, so I’m looking for a solid base rifle in the 800-1000 dollar range and I’ll add scopes and etc later. Would like bolt action, reliable, good for hunting.
What do y’all recommend?

Bergara is making some good shite lately. I don’t have any because I usually go custom but if I were to buy an off the shelf bolt action it would be Bergara or maybe a Sako.

308 is a great round to go with.

Ruger American with Vortex scope is a great value package and are typically tack drivers. I purchased one for my son in 6.5 cripple-more and am amazed by how well it shoots (better than some of my higher end rifles). Has a nice trigger too. I like .308 for all around caliber, less recoil than the 30-06, but still good for large game, and ammo is relatively easy to find. My 2-cents…dissenting opinions incoming ;)

Winchester model 70 extreme weather is the best thing going in this bracket IMO. It comes with a very good fiberglass stock (most synthetic stocks are just plastic), great trigger, great action.
Some other ones to look at that I like a lot in no particular order:
Tikka T3
Weatherby vanguard
Howard 1500
Model 70 sporter (if you prefer wood)
Ruger model 77
All are quality rifles that will shoot well and last a lifetime.

Begarra in 308.
It uses the rem 700 style action so there is plenty of aftermarket support for it if you like to upgrade. The 308 has been one of the most available cartridges on the shelf for the last two years and while it may not be as sexy as some other rounds it is a great cartridge that will not be the limiting factor for most hunters.
They have a several models in that price range, I have a b14 ridge in 6.5 and have only shot a box of shells through it shoots cheap hornady whitetail shells sub one inch at 100 yards

Look at the Howa rifles. Weatherby uses their barreled actions on the Vanguard. I was going to get one before going the AR route.

Just bought a Remington 700 7mm-08 from Walmart for $620. New trigger and stock and it’s shooting sub .5 MOA with factory ammo.

.308 Ruger American with a magpul stock is a fine set up

Savage axis 2 and a Leupold would be under 1000 total. no need to change trigger or stock.

I like both the calibers you’ve narrowed it down to. One thing I’ll add is, during the ammo shortage it seemed like 308 was usually one of the only rounds on the shelf.

Get a Tikka T3x and don't look back.

That's what i settled on this time. Everything else is too expensive and low availability right now.

I love my Howa in 308. Great quality and accuracy.
Fine Japanese workmanship.

My Tikka is a tack driver but I got it years ago when they were $500. For Tikka MSRP these days, I think Bergara is the best gun at those price points. Also look at Savage 110 rifles. I'd rather have a 30-06 than 308. More powder to sling those 180gr partitions at elk and big muleys. If only for deer in SE USA, 308 is fine.

My only center fire bolt action is the cheapo model Savage Axis in 308, the one that comes with a scope for about $350. It’s more accurate than I am but obviously a budget rifle. It’s surprisingly finicky about ammo though unlike my AR10 which eats anything. If all Savages are so finicky then I’d buy a different brand.

Why not both?
Howa 1500 in .308 - fine rifle

They usually aren't.
ETA: Glad you like your gun.

If you can't find what you want In stock set an alert at midway. It's how I was able to get a WINCHESTER.
