For Tikka MSRP these days

Agreed. When they were $550, they were definitely the best thing under about $700. It was basically the only thing in that price bracket that was light weight and definitely going to be accurate. At their new price point, ehhh. Everything on the market shoots great these days so it comes down to what features you want/like in a given price bracket.

For me, its a non-tupperware stock (fiberglass or nice wood), hinged floorplate or blind box (no clips ), and between 7.5 and 8.5 pounds empty.

Get a ruger American hunter with the magpul stock in 308. Alternative is get an American predator and buy the magpul aftermarket, will be the same gun with a slight difference in barrel contour. Will be a joy to shoot off the bench and a perfectly capable hunting rifle. Threaded for a suppressor if you ever go that route, accurate, ergonomic, and reliable in a caliber that never stopped being available. Prettymuch the end all be all of entry level do everything bolt actions.

I’ve been trying to find a non eBay one for months with no luck. I even called magpul and they were more frustrated than I was with the supply chain issues. Considering bell and Carlson or just selling the rifle altogether.

To OP, my ruger American is a quality rifle for the price but trigger and stock leave a lot to be desired. I have several tikkas and love them. However, I despise my ruger m77 30.06. Most frustrating rifle I own by far.

I just skimmed the thread.

The good.

.308 it is the perfect hunting round for the Americas

The bad

Savage AXIS - these guns are just crap. Find something better, savage makes better rifles for not much more. It is all about the magazine and feeding, that is where the Axis SUCKS.

Vortex - Vortex has a great warranty, and well, you will need it. There are much better optics brands out there in the price range, I would go with swampfox optics for a budget friendly optic. Much better than Vortex, same great warranty but you are less likely to need it, much less likely.

I tend to agree. I’ll eventually get something better.

308. You can get Compact length or standard length. I’ve had a few Ruger Americans
Which are very accurate but, they are budget rifles. A stainless Tika , Ruger 77 or
Bergara would be life time rifles... any 06 would be standard action, but still a great choice of caliber. You won’t go wrong with either......

I like my tikka t3 superlite. I have one on 7mm rem mag, but plan to buy one in 308 also. I think I bought mine for $699 at sportsman’s warehouse in Slidell.

Just bought a Remington 700 7mm-08 from Walmart for $620.

I bought 3 of them when Walmart stopped selling guns in 2020.
They were $200 each.
I sent two of the actions off to be “fixed”. Rebuilt them and they both shoot better than .5” at 100yds.

I love these threads. I shop rifles every time. I need to get out and hold it first though. I hunt deer with a 1958 Remington 740 Woodsmaster 30-06. It weighs 100 lbs, but it works and I think it is awesome to shoot with something my grandpa killed a bear with in the 60s. But, I need a lighter, reliable gun for my son. I don't necessarily want to do the .270 thing, I'd rather get a .308 and have it for me or him to use for a long time. Ruger American looks easy to find, but black is boring for the synthetic stock. Bergara - what model(s)? Tikka look harder to find, maybe hard to get my hands on before buying. Would love to stay 800 or under, I guess. It's fun to buy firearms (and scopes) though.

If you would expand your thinking in guns, an AR-10 is a really great gun especially with and adjustable stock. Your kid can grow up shooting one and will be able to hunt with it the rest of their life

Lots of good suggestions, but my thinking agrees w/ Downshift.

What kind of safety do you wan? How does the stock fit you? Do the gun point well naturally for you? Do you want a removable box magazine, blind magazine or hinged floor plate? Do you want the gun to have a nice butt pad? Is the trigger adjustable?

These are a few of the questions you need to answer to better know what gun you want.

ETA: Personally I'd first look at a Savage, using the savings to spend on optics and ammo. I think the 308 Win is a fine choice. Admittedly, I've never shot a Bergara, but it feels like it's replaced Tikka as the OB's official rifle.

There's alot of good things about them, especially if you're a box stand hunter. I want one. Supposedly the Smith and Wesson M&P 10 is really accurate and fairly priced.

Just be careful, AR-10 is specific to Armalite. DPMS style has far more options than the AR-10. Its a different beast than the AR-15.

I started out wanting to put together a new bolt action rifle, but ended up with a LR-308 (DPMS version of AR-10)

If you order AR-10 parts for a DPMS style gun, you'll probably end up sending them back.

I handled a lot of guns, IMO the WIN model 70 has the smoothest action and will be my next rifle in 25-06 or 243

308 for ammo availability for sure. Tikka, bergara, weatherby, browning, ruger will all be fine. Just shop for the best deal. Consider going with a compact over a full length rifle.

got a Savage 110 long range hunter in 6.5-284 that I got for about $500. Really just got it to use as a barreled action for a chassis. At the smith now getting blueprinted, crowned, etc.
