UPDATE: Outboard won’t fire…need some tips

UPDATE: Cleaned the battery cables. 2 of them were slightly dirty but not horrible. Then I just tried it and it would turn over and then hum. It has a built in trickle charger so I’m going to leave it over night. Might bring the batteries and have them checked. Theyre new but dated 2/19 so they’ve been sitting for 3 years. One other thing when I put the key in the run position it beeps and the low oil light comes on. It’s full of oil. I’m not sure if this is a pre start routine or if it’s really sensing it’s low on oil. But I do think I have spark.
I’ve got an old outboard (90 hp Yamaha) that my FIL had for several years and just didn’t have time to run it. 2 years ago he had it tuned up and got it running again. I think he changed spark plugs and drained fuel and changed the batteries. But its pretty much been sitting since.
So he let me bring it home so I could use it some with my kids.
I trickle charged the batteries (2) but it still didn’t seem like it had a great charge. So today I jumped them and put them on my car. The engine turned over much stronger than with just the trickle charge but won’t fire. It turns over enough to start pissing but won’t fire.
I checked the kill switch and its clipped on. There is a set of wires that are not connected that appears to maybe be the running lights but I wonder if the kill switch is wired in this. Fuel line primes and has pressure. Fresh non-ethanol gas added today. I think I’ll have to replace the batteries.
Any advice before I take it to the shop? I’m relatively handy but not as much with an outboard motor. I just don’t think its getting fuel although the line seems fine all the way to the motor.

Pull a plug out and see if it's firing. Maybe one of these testers If you don't know what you're doing

Check your spark plugs 1st. Then check your fuel lines in the motor.

My old two stroke it was a bad kill switch in the control box.
The engine would do everything but send spark to the plug.

first thing to do if you have no spark is to unplug that big connector under the cover and see if it starts, that may bypass the kill switch and you will have to manually jump the starter.
either way you need to see if its corroded. if that looks ok, then add light smear of wheel bearing grease in the plug socket when you reconnect it. the grease seals out water and helps neutralize any corrosion trying to start.
after that its checking any other plug connections and doing the same with those.
if after all that it still has no spark then it may be the black box ecm/cdi whatever you want to call it

Power pack issue? Sand the magneto?

spray some starting fluid into the air intake to verify if a fuel problem

Did you choke it when starting?
When you pump the bubble on the fuel line can you feel the gas going through it and does it stay firm?
Are you trying to use the same fuel that has been sitting in the tank since it was put away? If so you may need to drain it and put fresh fuel in it.
Was the motor ever made ethanol ready? If not any one of the lines that handle fuel may be bad, screens plugged, and carbonator plugged up.

Hit it with a little starting fluid to make sure it’s not firing.

Should be SOP in most troubleshooting endeavors. Starting fluid, 3 beers, country gold, tobacco of choice.

I once had a boat with carb issues that I thought was fixed and made it about a mile out and it quit and wouldn’t restart.
I used 2 full cans of starting fluid just steady spraying into it to drive it back to the ramp

All of the above.
Check that it is getting fuel.
Be sure thee is no water in the fuel. Best just to get fresh stuff.
Be sure plugs are firing.
Starting fluid can be fun….
When it gets into electrical, I defer to a friend or repair shop.

I've never owned a boat that didn't require me to work on it for a day prior to going fishing.

Had an old yamaha.... Choke valves actually broke off as it got older... had to start it with starter fluid. Might check the intakes and see. Either way if it doesn't fire by spraying them in the intake you know it's a different issue.
I'd go to plugs next and then to electrical in that order.
Also bulbs on the fuel line...even a pinhole leak can cause major problems.

had same problem less than 100 hours yamaha 4 stroke- put in new batteries - 3 different mechanics fiddled no luck- my handyman said let me look at it - took a wire brush to the ground wire - VROOM

Are you using non-ethanol fuel?

had the same thing going on with an outboard I had picked up that was sitting up. It would turn over but wouldn't fire.
Ended up being a bad crank position sensor at the flywheel, easy fix.
...or the carbs are gummed up from sitting up

I was told that it is bad to run/start a two stroke on starter fluid b/c it has no lubricaton (oil) in it. I’ve done it a few times but just be wary. Could be just internet experts giving internet advice.
