I have took Lunesta and ambian, neither helped. Is there anything over the counter that helps ?

Yes, I've tried a few things, but Benadryl actually does the best for me.

Usually I just wait until exhaustion sets in.

Occasionally, usually if there's something work related that stressing me out.
You could also try the au natural method of tugging one out, that helps sometimes.

Edit: in all seriousness, I've dealt with insomnia for 20 years and I've yet to find anything that definitively works. Ambien gave me blackout episodes of "drunkenness" so I threw that in the trash, melatonin occasionally helps but has a hangover effect, the zzzquil stuff is hit or miss, etc. Overall, I find things to expend the excess mental energy on to the point of exhaustion and pass out.

Read a book in bed … turn the tv off and the phone off
Get relaxed
I have no trouble at all going to bed

How old are you? It's definitely something that sets in when you start to get older. I eat 10mg of THC and sleep well now.

Zzzquil or Neurosleep usually work pretty well for me.

If you cannot sleep the best thing to do is get out of bed and do something. When you can sleep then get into bed.
You have to know that not everyone needs 8 hours of sleep.
But never get into bed to just lay there.

Unisom - The one with Doxylamine Succinate NOT Diphenhydramine.
The Walmart Brand Equate or any generic Doxylamine Succinate.

I used to have bad insomnia, then I had two kids and became the owner of a company. Now I fall asleep at traffic lights, drive-thrus, grocery checkouts, and pretty much any other place I stand still for more than 12 seconds.

Wake up early, exercise, eat your bigger meal at lunch instead of dinner, about an hour before bedtime take Magnesium on an empty stomach. Establish a bed time and stick to a routine. Dark room and put the phone down.

I've struggled with this in the past and have overcome it with supplements and lifestyle changes.
A few supplements to consider are ZMA, L-Theanine, and CBD oil. All three have helped me relax and fall asleep faster, sleep deeper, and are backed by science.
Avoid things like Alcohol and THC, as they may help you fall asleep faster, but your quality of sleep will suffer significantly.
Lifestyle factors to consider are getting adequate sunlight during the day, not getting too much light or screen time later in the evening, getting enough exercise, and not eating too near to bedtime.
Also, try to use your bedroom for only two things: Sleep and Sex. Using it for anything else confuses your brain and body when it comes time to wind down.

Crank one off, then sleep like a baby.
