United States Oil Production by Month

Hell of a pandemic dip. What occurred circa 2007/2008 that started such a large uptrend after 20 something year downtrend?

The shale boom.

So according to these charts, the US is producing more oil now than anytime in history outside of 6 months during the trump presidency?

Go to the site and look at the 5 year chart. Oil production increased steadily until the pandemic. We are now back down to Nov 2018 levels but not on a steady upward curve like we were pre-pandemic. We will not be energy independent again unless that changes.

Correct. It's not perfect but it's the most transparent data set in the world market.

Us refiners are about at the maximum light crude they can refine.

In round numbers, the US produces 12 MMBD (million barrels a day), refines 16 MMBD, exports 3.5 MMBD and imports 6 MMBD. The slight differences in these numbers per week result in inventory build or draw.

About half of the imports are from Canada because refiners need heavy crude to mix with lighter grades. Our Gulf refineries predate the shale boom and were originally tooled to take Venezuelan and Middle Eastern crude.
