Key Takeaways
Russian authorities ended the “counterterrorism” operation in Belgorod Oblast and claimed to have defeated the all-Russian pro-Ukrainian Russian Volunteer Corps (RDK) and the Freedom of Russia Legion (LSR) in the region on May 23.
Russian forces likely pushed the RDK and LSR forces at least to the Kozinka border settlement and possibly out of Russian territory as of May 23.
Russian sources claimed that Ukrainian forces conducted raids across the Kharkiv-Belgorod border on May 23, but ISW has observed no confirmation that these raids occurred.
Ukrainian officials stated that the pace of fighting in the Bakhmut direction has decreased amid continued limited Ukrainian counterattacks on Bakhmut’s flanks on May 23.
Russian forces conducted limited ground attacks northeast of Kupyansk and along the Svatove-Kreminna line.
Russian forces continued offensive operations on the Avdiivka-Donetsk City line.
Russian forces continued defensive operations in southern Ukraine ahead of the planned Ukrainian counteroffensive.
Pardoned Wagner Group convicts continue to commit crimes in Russia after finishing their military contracts with Wagner.
Zaporizhia Oblast occupation officials announced the start of preliminary voting for the ruling United Russia party.

British Defence Intelligence
INTELLIGENCE UPDATE
UPDATE ON UKRAINE 24 May 2023
Credible research by independent Russian journalists suggests that between January and May 2023, Russian military courts dealt with 1,053 cases of personnel going absent without leave (AWOL) - more than during the whole of 2022.
Russia's military has struggled to enforce discipline in its ranks throughout its operations in Ukraine, but its issues have highly likely worsened following the forced mobilisation of reservists since October 2022.
Court data suggests that most of those found guilty of going AWOL are now punished with suspended sentences, meaning they can be redeployed to the 'special military operation'. Russia's efforts to improve discipline have focused on making examples of defaulters, and promoting patriotic zeal, rather than addressing the root causes of soldiers' disillusionment.

UK Defence Minister Ben Wallace went to Kyiv to meet with Reznikov. Reznikov tweeted:
I find this very interesting, as the next Ramstein meeting is tomorrow, and there would be ample opportunity there to discuss the items Reznikov mentioned. Meeting today indicates that they wanted to work something out in advance of the Ramstein meeting, so that they can convince NATO and other partners to join in supporting it.
Notice the card in the center of that? It's a first photo we have of a Su-24 carrying a Storm Shadow missile.

I was glad to host my great friend Ben Wallace, @BWallaceMP, in Kyiv.
We had a very meaningful discussion focused on priorities for increasing Ukraine’s defense capabilities, particularly providing long-range weapons such as Storm Shadow.
We also discussed prospects for Ukraine's NATO accession and our vision of future peace and stability in Europe as outlined in President Zelenskyy's Peace Formula.

Turkey won't go for this now, they are making serious bank playing both sides, especially with Putin wooing Erdogan
Turkey does have a lot of business interests in Ukraine, some destroyed by Russia, but it's also getting a shitton of Russian money and very very cheap oil.

This is nothing new. I tend to take people at their word, when they spend years saying the same things. Its not like he's held back in saying what the natural borders of Russia would be-- I mean, this is a guy who in 2019 put in an English language Foreign Affairs journal, in plain words, his belief in non-sovereignty of Ukraine.
And those who understood world policies understood exactly what Putin and Russia were up to, what their goals were, and what kind of conditions would lead to an expansion of the land grab. Here is a succinct summary of the situation from John McCain back in the day. Twitter LINK. He nails it.

McCain understood Putin perfectly. Obama and Trump both had a foreign policy of weakness, and that's why, now, we are where we are.

McCain did have a front row seat at Putin's Munich speech in 2007. Trump was way more aggressive than Obama. Obama passed in the 2014 invasion and did next to nothing. Trump put a hold on Nordstream 2 with a billions in capital already invested by Russia.
He cannot say he won't support Ukraine as the nutter faction of his base would boo him like they did when he claimed because of him 100 million were saved by HIS Operation Warp Speed.
I have a personal friend in his campaign. More pro Ukraine, and anti Russia than even Wee Wee could imagine.

Let me guess, you voted for McKinney of the Green Party instead of McCain or Obama. Yet supported Ru Paul in the primary.

C'mon, man. How do you think that Putin interpreted this?
I'll tell you how he interpreted it: Putin decided that NATO was weak and horribly divided, and that the US had lost interest in European security.
Trump made the idiotic "peace deal" with the Taliban that set in motion the Afghanistan disaster (though the primary blame for that still goes to Biden). And Trump fluffed Kim Jong-Un and legitimized and humanized the world's worst dictator, in Trump's idiotic belief that he could sweet-talk Kim into giving up nukes.
No, that's probably not as bad as Obama's Ukraine weakness, his "reset button" for Putin, his insane "red line" with Syrian chemical weapons that turned out to mean nothing, his insistence on refusing to leave a "training" force in Iraq that could have confronted ISIS and prevented Iran from establishing a permanent militia in that country, the Libya (and especially Benghazi) fiasco, and the weakness of the Iran deal that ultimately led to Trump discarding it (neither policy worked).
So, no, Trump's foreign policy didn't have as many failures as Obama's, but that's not saying much.

Trump has intimated that if he were in office he could broker a deal to quickly end the war.
If this is the case then why didn’t he end the war in Ukraine while he was president? To his credit he did provide Ukraine with more aid than Obama did, but he did nothing to bring peace.

Trump had a foreign policy of weakness ?
Praising John McCain? The same John McCain funneling weapons, training, and money to known terrorist groups to overthrow Assad. The same type of shite that caused Benghazi?
I thought the poli-board was going over the top regarding this thread but you people are fricked in the head. Holy shite.

Yeah man… I know it’s a hard concept to grasp, but a person can be right about one thing and wrong about something else.
What McCain said about Putin was 100% on point… doesn’t mean he wasn’t wrong on other foreign policy topics.
