This is one of the most NIMBY stretches in the whole city, but it's also still a rural two lane cross section with no sidewalks, no turn lanes, and horrific traffic tie ups every time someone has to make a left turn.

The current plan for Lee Drive is to build a center turning lane, making the entire stretch of the road from Perkins to Highland three lanes total.

quote:

Bicycle lanes and sidewalks are also on the list of changes to expect. To improve safety for pedestrians, the city-parish will also look into options for better lighting along the corridor.

“We’re also going to look at improving a lot of the lighting because if we’re going to do sidewalks and bike lanes we want to be sure people feel comfortable walking out there when they want to do that," said Raiford.

So long as they don't cut down the trees, I'm in support of it. But you know the neighborhood will have a element that seeks to squash the project entirely instead of trying to negotiate for additional features (decorative light poles, subsurface drainage, buried power lines) for a project that might benefit everyone.

This is the typical cross sections proposed (preliminary):

The current state of Lee drive is why I'd never live in Southdowns.

Good luck with that.

Outside of eminent domain to grab a ton of land, either people’s yards or whole houses, I don’t see this happening.

Four words: Government Street Road Diet. Go take a look at it. If it's any indication, this will take years longer than planned, look far worse than what is sold, and create as many problems as it attempts to fix. The roundabout at Lobdell is the only improvement I've seen from that project. The center plantings are trash-covered shambles. Many of the curbs are already broken. And every jalopy that breaks down, accident, and school entrance causes huge backups.

Why no turn lane from the bridge northbound to Tupelo St?

If you're taking land for a median, bike paths and sidewalks then go ahead and take another 10 feet for a center lane.

I guess we'll fix this with MovEBR2060.

Some of those houses between Hyacinth and Perkins don't have the driveway to park a LWB pickup without sticking into the street. 1 car parking crossways on the lot.

frick a bike line make it 4 lanes of traffic. It is literally one of the most traveled thoroughfare from I10 to LSU and its a freaking 2 lane highway. Not to mention theres not even a cross walk at Lee and Highland.

Do this and it will destroy another great neighborhood of Baton Rouge. It will literally phucking destroy this neighborhood.
Everyone who lives there should fight this with torch fire.

Best solution is to close Lee Dr. and have it only open to those people that live on that street. Have a gate card system, I am serious.

Lee Drive desperately needed improvements 30 years ago, but these plans are bullshite wastes of money that will do nothing to fix any of the problems currently facing Lee Drive.

Just make Lee and Stanford one direction drives. Simplest fix.

All the plans and construction in the world will not help traffic when a train is on the tracks.

Adding a middle lane is doable. Very minimal would have to be done to actual houses. Adding a bike lane and a sidewalk I dont think is possible. Sidewalks would be at peoples front doors.

The construction during this will be a disaster

They will probably frick it up like they did Government street. They added a turning lane but every spot you want to turn left they put in a damn flower bed so you can't. The road is too narrow to comfortably take u turns when you can't turn left. You have to have one of the other, ability to turn left or easy u turns. Just thinking about this pisses me off. We should have all private roads, frick the government.

They need to have an elevated Lee Drive exit that goes over college drive and brings you down to near the 4 way stop at highland. Clear some of that shite out for people trying to get to the interstate from over there and clear College at the same time.

Lee Drive needs a road diet. Also in desperate need of bike lanes. I used to ride it and highland to LSU and it was dangerous 15 years ago.

Highland also needs bike lanes too. Who ever put together those super tight right of ways back in the day was an idiot.

Highland is designated as Historic Road and cannot be modified.

Highland was originally a wagon road and that is why it is narrow.

Examine Cal Rd. and what Bluebonnet did to that once quite neighborhood.
