I fricking love my cat. I also have 4 dogs.
The house we moved into had a mouse problem and it took about a year but the cat took care of the problem completely. Now he's moved onto chipmunks and birds and kill perimeter around the house keeps moving further out.
As for maintenance I buy a big bag of meow mix once every 6-7 months and he does his business outside so outside of his food dish and the shared water bowl I don't do anything except his rabies shot.
He goes out every evening when we go to bed and I don't see him until the next morning even if it's 15 degrees outside
