Galveston Girl was modified to a two seater. Sadly, she went down with the pilot and passenger a few years ago.

Years ago I went to the Oshkosh air show. Everyone should go at least once. The shite you will see that is privately owned. Your mind will be blown
My family went once when I was a kid. Saw the Concorde, got a Concorde shirt. Wish I still had it.

Looks like it's painted for a squadron out of Italy.
Correct. If that’s not a repaint that plane and pilot were part of the Checkertail Clan. They were the 317th, 318th, 319th squadrons of the 325th fighter group. I wondering if this guy knows what he has? Checkertail Clan were some of the baddest mofos out there at the time. Suffered the lowest casualties and most kills of European Theater.

I see "Iwo Jima" written, which means it also saw action in the Pacific Theater? That's confusing.
Once they were done in Italy the Checkertail Clan were to be deployed to Japan/SE Asia but two weeks before they were to leave Japan surrendered.
Google Herschel Green. He was one of many that were Checkertail Clan pilots that destroyed everything in their path escorting bombers.

I was fortunate enough to see the Champlin Fighter Museum in Phoenix before it closed.
It too was one helluva collection from pre-WWI thru Vietnam. I believe all were capable of flight. The collection also included firearms and lots of fighter ace memorabilia (Axis and Allies). A T-34 was present as well.

It isn't Oshkosh by any means but if anyone ever finds themselves around Virginia Beach, there's a fantastic military aviation museum that has a ton of WW2 aircraft and a few WW1 replicas.

Some solid google pics.
