Part of the P51 long range was a fuselage tank mounted behind and below the pilot seat. Most most civilian aircraft don't need that kind of range so they remove the tank and the associated radio equipment that sat above it and added a second seat

What is this

Fighter escorts for daylight bombing raids over the third reich. Long range fighters like the P-51 saved untold thousands of American lives by distracting/killing German ME-109s and FW-190s.

ALl that money and the damn thing got an oil leak.

That’s a hydraulic leak(which I guess is technically an oil leak). Either way, you only worry if it’s not leaking, because if it’s not leaking… it’s empty.

Looks like some glycol leaking too.. Rule of thumb for preflight is if you can jump over the puddle it's good to go

I’ll defer to you based on your username. Probably coolant, forgot the Merlin was water cooled through the belly.

Not pink enough for hydraulic fluid on second look.

ETA: Damn good looking Mustang. Never wanted to own one, but I’d sure appreciate the opportunity to take one for a trip around the flag pole.

Looks like it's painted for a squadron out of Italy.

Good find, only difference I see is the checkering on the wing tips.

I'm no expert on WW2 aircraft but knew the markings were not those used for D Day so looked up P51 paint schemes.

he promised I can ride in it to the EAA event in WI next July

If this is actually true that's awesome! I would pay a good amount of money to fly in this beauty!

Nor am I when it comes to specific markings. For instance, I’ve never had a clue what the large numbers beneath the canopy mean. The people I’ve met that do know are typically of the historian variety vs. airplane nerd. I consider myself the latter.

Except D-day markings. I can spot them anywhere, which I’m pretty sure was the original intent of the invasion stripes.

Crazy those sold for cheap a few years back. I bet he paid close to $3m for that plane in that condition. At least 2.5

My all-time favorite aircraft. If I had one, I’d paint it as either of these WWII birds. However, if it actually flew missions in WWII, I’d restore it to its wartime paint job

How did they avoid shooting their own propeller off when it was spinning ?

Never mind, I googled it.

Dude. The guns are in the wings and didn’t fire through the props

I remember back in the late ‘60s there was a man Bill Fornof in Houma that had a P-51, think it was copper colored and if I remember correctly he also had a Bearcat.
As a young boy with gleaming eyes my cousin and I would go and see these aircraft often.
His son Corky Fornof, went on to have a career as a stunt pilot.
There is no other like the P-51, thanks for the photos.

Years ago I went to the Oshkosh air show. Everyone should go at least once. The shite you will see that is privately owned. Your mind will be blown

My best friend was this guy's roommate at Homestead AFB (he flew F-16's) and relocated back to MN a few yrs ago from AZ. Two summers ago we were on the deck at his lakehouse and could hear a plane flying around the lake and through the trees and my buddy immediately recognizes the sound of a P-51. A year or so later he's in an American Legion post in Crosslake, MN and overhears some old-timers discussing their aircraft, including one guy talking about his P-51. My buddy asks if he ever flies around his lake and he said he lives on that lake. They become friends and he finds out the guy owns eight vintage fighter aircraft- including two P-51's, a Corsair and a few others and they are hangared in Brainerd, MN. Just the costs of keeping those planes in the air has to be astronomical. My goal is to check out that collection next summer when back there.

Here are a pics of the two at the dock of my friend's lakehouse with one of the eight planes- a 1946 Republic Seabee.

The owner told me $3,500/hr to operate- I will ask how he arrived at that $ figure.. I would imagine a huge chunk of that includes hangar fees and maintenance costs to keep the thing in the air and I know for a fact the 100/130 fuel that thing guzzles ain't cheap.

$3.5k an hour seems realistic. I doubt it has anything to do with hangar fees. My info is dated but I heard the 100 hr inspection was $25k. That was years back too, maintenance costs are higher now.

P-38s were most certainly in production during the war, most notably being flown by Dick Bong, highest scoring US ace of all time and downing Adm Yamamoto’s transport.

I might know someone in that same squadron that downed Yamamoto's plane, currently.

My uncle happened to be a Delta pilot...33 years based in Dallas. He was Senior most in the entire fleet his last 6 months. A lot of the WW2 aces lived up there. What a life.
