Not trying to be an arse, but the P-51 is a single seat aircraft, so how are you supposed to be able to ride in it?
My exact question when he talked about taking it for a ride with him and his response:
"It was re-outfitted when taken out of commission and then rudder pedals were pulled out so someone in back couldn't frick it up."
He said it was common for collectors to convert it to a two-seater. I'm 6', 215 and it will be a tight fit!

Gorgeous plane. It's leaking something. Get that fixed before boarding.

I remember when they were @ $500K...my uncle flew for both the CAF and Kavanaugh....P 51 ,Spitfire, and Messerschmidt. He went to London for the 50th anniversary of the Spitfire. I attended the 50th anniversary of VE at Kavanaugh and met some of the US aces and 2 Luftwaffe pilots. When I asked one of the German pilots how he knew the was was over, P 51s over Berlin. He was shot down twice over Moscow.

Mr. Emery Lyon, the owner Lyon Flying Service in Welsh, LA had a black one back in day. Looked something like this minus the skull and bones. He traded it for two AgCats.

Awesome bird, a friend of mine owns "Lady Alice" out of chino, he did his training in Florida @ Stallion 51. Tell your buddy congrats, and if he was a Delta Captain, he would have bought 2.

P51-D, i built about half of dozen of them as a kid (models). One of best single engine fighter planes in WW2. Spitfire, Zero, Me-109s, the others but if i had my pick i would take P-51.
However, it’s cousin, the dual engine P-38 lighting aka “fork tailed devil” by Germans to me was the baddest mfer in the air, (non jet), certainly the most feared by Germans. It was so bad arse they would regularly shot down ME-262s as they came in to land.

don't think it was in production before the war's end, baw

it was at it's most vulnerable at that point, good tactic by the good guys

P-38s were most certainly in production during the war, most notably being flown by Dick Bong, highest scoring US ace of all time and downing Adm Yamamoto’s transport.
