Will this really work? Ford to lose $3 billion this year on EV sales?

The people buying ICE pickup trucks are helping sustain their EV business. This is probably going to be the model going forward until drivers become accustomed to EV's shortcomings or until regulations driving EV investment are curbed.
But right now Ford is in the strange position of relying on gas guzzler sales (pickups) to fund their EV business. If pickup sales decline because of a tighter credit market or a recession, Ford's EV business is in trouble.

Not sure I'd buy an EV that wasn't a Tesla product right now.

The $3 billion loss is roughly equal to what it lost on EVs on that basis the last two years combined. It said it lost about $900 million in 2021 and $2.1 billion in 2022. It’s the first time it gave a breakout of the results from its EV operations.
But it said it still expects EVs to start making money soon, going from a 40% operating loss margin last year, when it sold about 96,000 EVs, bringing in $5.3 billion in revenue, to about an 8% profit margin by the end of 2026. It expects increased production of EVs to bring global product of those vehicles to a 2 million annual rate by the end of that year.

But when questioned during an investor conference call Thursday whether or not Ford would be able to hit its EV profit goals, John Lawler, Ford’s CFO, said the company is confident with its projection, partly because of the number of Tesla alumni it has been able to hire away.

We didn’t know it’s 70 pounds heavier and that that’s [cost an extra] $300 a battery,” he said on a call with investors. “We didn’t know that we underinvested in braking technology to save on the battery size.”

No it won’t work

Coal powered cars that can’t be cost-effectively fixed or repaired for everyone!

I really have no desire to own one at all given the current technology.

Let’s rush a “solution” without actually doing the research to see if it will actually work.
Where have I heard this before
Hmm

No, it won’t work…. Which is why the federal govt will double down and waste even more tax money on it

Anyone know why EV's didn't take the propane approach? Just roll up and swap out your battery for another charged one? I get charging at the house overnight, but traveling must be awful.

I can't wait to bail out all the companies that aren't Tesla because they think Americans want EVs when they don't

Man I am not buying a car for the foreseeable future. I’ll just keep maintaining the ones I got - which includes a 13 year old truck and a 12 year old car.
The ICE vehicle prices are outrageous to subsidize the EV bullshite. And the EV prices are already high AND they have some serious limitations. The first time I have to stop for 45 minutes to an hour to recharge a battery after driving 400 miles I’m going to lose my mind.
The American public is getting assraped on car and gas prices to sooth the feeling of these climatologists and their new secular religion. It’s disgusting.

because we don’t have the materials available in sufficient abundance to power all the electric cars the government wants currently, much less have spare batteries

I'm only guessing at this point, but the infrastructure (real estate, electrical requirements, staff training, and environmentalist crap) to swap out batteries would be a huge barrier to accomplishing that. Unrealistically expensive.

Oh god here we go again...10 plus pages of OT baws screaming they will never own an EV sounding just like the people who said they would never get rid of their house phone for one of those silly cell phones.

People buy teslas because they are cool cars and can go fast as frick. Had they provided the same technological advancements but in an ICE, people would still buy them.
Most aren’t buying them simply because they are EV’s.

Funny you should ask this. It is being trialed overseas now. Pretty crazy!

Tesla sold 1,250,000 model 3 and Y in 2022...Yeah...clearly people hate them

I figure because the battery is the most expensive single component on the vehicle. Additionally, there is a finite amount of batteries available. To make battery banks for swap out you would need multiple batteries available for every vehicle.
With propane, the tanks are cheap and the propane to refill is cheap and refilling is quick and simple.
I am curious if a compressed air generator charging the batteries would produce enough to extend the range of electric vehicles.

Most consumers don’t want EV’s.
Those technological turds will sit on showroom floors.
You can debate the merits of the environmental impact all day long but the performance and price of most EV’s are well below consumer expectations.

Hybrids make a lot of sense. All Electric, doesn't make a lot of sense. Skipping over Hybrids, which is a perfectly reasonable bridge to full EV's when the infrastructure and technology have caught up, make absolutely zero sense. Trace the money, who stands to make the most money on Cobalt mining that knows someone in the current administration?

Frick Ford. The consumer is having to pay inflated prices on their ICE vehicles to subsidize their lightnings and Mach-e’s.
45k for a bare bones bronco plus dealer wants another $5k. All American mfgs except stellantis are crap.
