So he went all the way up there to be a man and say what he needed to say in person, and that’s still not good enough. How many times have coaches just bolted and never gave their former team this respect? I’ll answer for you: pretty much every time. Lincoln Riley didn’t go back. That was just a few days after assuring his players he was committed to the Sooners. One of the dads even posted as much.

Pretty sure you're confusing me for someone else.

And you're confusing responsible adults with college kids. Not saying there is a better time, per se, but imagine going to bed hearing that your coach is bolting when you still have a shot at the playoffs, probably up all night reading stuff or talking to people, then getting up for an early meeting to have it all confirmed in about 10 minutes and then........guess it's back to the dorm.

Maybe "shitty" was strong, probably no better way to do that, but it's a rough situation.

He handled it like a professional grownup

He could have just left them cold like Riley did .

We have a grownup coach now

I'm glad he's our coach, but that was pretty shitty. Make them get up for a 7am meeting to only last about 10-15 minutes

Was he suppose to blow each on of them?

Not sure anyone here has ever been in this situation, but I'm willing to bet that only a handful of his loyals showed up. He gave them a quick talk and hugged the ones there.

I’m thrilled to have Brian Kelly as LSU head coach. And these coaching changes typically happen this way. But I still can’t put my hands around leaving Notre Dame when they are still in the playoff hunt. Reminds me of the Bill Frieder to Steve Fisher situation.

Those kids went to Notre Dame with the hopes of winning a national championship, and him leaving has made the road much more difficult for them if they are able to get in.

Of course this could be a rallying point for the team, and if they do get in it would surely be a story every media outlet would run with. Which honestly wouldn’t look too good for LSU.

Having said that I don’t see any world where ND beats Georgia. But surely a coach of Kelly’s ilk doesn’t concede that.

Thrilled with the hire, but very interesting situation.

One thing for sure, Kelly will have to get used to most of his players "taking" online classes.

All valid questions and I have no doubt Kelly agonized over the timing.

Ultimately though, he gave 12 years to the university and he’s leaving the program in outstanding shape. If he feels he’s ready for a new challenge or just wants a change of scenery or yeah even if he just thinks our offer was too good to pass up, he’s got the right to make a move that he feels is best for him. It isn’t like he jumped at the first opportunity, he put everything he had into that job.

If he left after a down season people would say oh he’s bailing on them when the going gets tough, so there’s never going to be a perfect time to leave.

It’s an exciting time for LSU and honestly it will be exciting for ND once they get over the shock and have a new coach in place.

Sometimes a change is best for all parties after a long stint like that.

Kelly leaving ND is him conceding exactly that. The man came here to do what he knows can't be done at ND.

The 7 am thing is a funny Twitter meme but my god can people think about it for 2 seconds before they try to make it as an actual critique?

What would be the right time in this situation? I honestly don't know. I know it would have been weird to keep them there for an hour to talk about something they unfortunately found out about before they should have, and something that wasn't going to change.

Long goodbyes are annoying in general. He may have read the room and avoided awkwardness.

Or maybe he's an a-hole.

BK found out it might hit 70 degrees in Baton Rouge today... He's out of that freezer into the Sun.

Thinking about it critically,
BK sent them a message late last night, since the news leaked before he had a chance to tell them.

The hour is probably the earliest they could get the entire team into the meeting room.

Many of the players likely show up between 0530 and 0630 to lift weights, or see the trainer anyway.

It's Notre Dame, so they all have class. It's a Tuesday which means that classes likely start at 0815 or 0830.

They have to get in breakfast at some point, as well. Athletes meal routines are determined by the nutritionist or the s&c staff.

Like others have said, there was no need for a long drawn-out set of speeches; crocodile tears like Lincoln the Weakling.
