Why not go for Tom Herman? If I'm Auburn that's not a bad choice; seems better than some of the names I've seen rumored.

If he can’t do it at Texas with all the resources at his disposal he would fail miserably at usce

If I were a coach that was more concerned with living my life and growing my family somewhere nice and peaceful, South Carolina would be one of my top choices.

It's a beautiful state and on the coast, in the best conference, fairly low pressure with decent resources, a pretty long leash for a coach, and near fertile recruiting grounds.

SCar is a "sleeper" if there ever was one, all it takes is for UF and UGA to have down years (which they do plenty) and you're right there in the hunt for the division. Even if only ONE of them aren't on the top of their game (which seems to happen every year), you can fairly easily finish second in the division and the fans love you. Simply finish with a winning record yearly and you can enjoy life while making plenty of money, and still keep a job while competing for an SEC East title every so often when the stars align.

It really is an attractive job for a "family man" type coach.

I’d love to beat Tom Herman’s arse for a few years before Auburn fires him.

He knows that unless he makes the playoffs next year (unlikely) he is done at UT. Just trying to get out ahead of being fired to a place where expectations aren’t through the roof.

10 wins at UT and they want you fired. 10 wins at USC and they have a parade

It's easy to say that, yet Texas only has one national title since DKR was running the wishbone. There's a reason they had to settle on Charlie Strong. Most coaches can't or won't deal with that circus of a program.

If Herman won 63% of his games at South Carolina like he's done in Austin, he'd be a hero.

Entertaining that Texas tried to get Urban Meyer and Herman reached out to South Carolina. The divorce is coming.

Has Texas had a coach to leave on his own accord in the last 100 years? Hell, even Royal was forced into retirement when he really didn't want to. Mac Brown won a title but was still fired, for having a better record his last few years than his 2 replacements have had.

For a school who only has 1 title since the US left the gold standard, they think they are college football royalty and should compete for titles every year.

You'd have to be a moron to want to coach there.

Culturally a soft school. Would be badass to attend, just doesn't breed the type of player that you get at an Alabama, Auburn, UGA or LSU et al

I've always thought of South Carolina as a program with plenty of upside if they get the right coach. Their state is actually #6 for NFL players per capita. They compete with Clemson, UGA, and I guess maybe Auburn and Florida to the south and west for recruiting. But there is a decent talent pool with a large population up the coast and the ACC schools for the most part suck and/or don't care about football. Maybe not 1999 LSU level of sleeping giant, but certainly a program with a lot of potential. Outside of strength of conference, no innate reason why Clemson can thrive and they can't.

Herman has proven to be incredibly unlikable and weird, but if his prior track record from UH is any indication, it may have been a good fit and a nice spot for him to park for a while and build up a program with more reasonable expectations. Maybe not too dissimilar from what Kiffin did to rehabilitate his image.
