A la Paul Johnson at Georgia Tech.

Could they even lure Troy Calhoun or Jeff Monken? Or Willie Fritz?

Yes. Vandy will never get the athletes to compete with most other SEC teams. I would run a triple option like offense. Make it difficult for teams to prepare for them

Running option will make their recruiting worse. It'll just be a different way to lose.

If they went triple option, Vandy could be a consistent 6-6 team.

It may be good for 2 SEC wins per year - 3 or 4 in a good year or if you play teams whose coach is on the way out and are tanking.. In the ACC, you get to play 2/3 of your games against soft defenses. In the SEC, it’s 1/3. Most of the SEC teams, if focused, would sit on that option offense.

A high risk type offense is what they and all lower tier programs should run. Air raid, triple option, heavy read option with high percentage of throws is probably ideal. It will give you a chance to win some games you shouldn't when everything bounces your way and is clicking for a game. You wont be as consistent which is good for a program like that which is consistently bad.

I'd go the air raid route if I were them. SEC defensive lines are too good for the triple option offense to have much success.

I would go find a coach who will throw it 60 times a game and almost never kicks, whether it is punts or FGs.

They should study what Coastal Carolina is doing and emulate that. Running a traditional triple option helps teams that cannot recruit athletes to match up against the rest of the league, but it’s simply not creative enough to catch a prepared team off guard. You have to meld option concepts with the RPO and spread.

Fritz doesn't run his option offense anymore.

It would be a new wrinkle if Vandy had any offense, really.

I think SEC defenses are too fast for the Triple Option to work. LSU utterly destroyed GT in a bowl, and Georgia Southern when they ran a mostly option based offense. It could very much get you wins in all your mom conference games though.

The Air Raid is more of a gimmick than the FlexBone. The Air Raid is easy to run. Any offense truthfully is a gimmick.

Yes he does. Just because it is not a pitch does not mean it is not an option offense.

No he doesn't. They've run a power spread the last two years under Will Hall and he just hired Chip Long to replace Hall after he went to be the HC at Southern Miss.

It is still option based that is what I am saying He runs it a different way but it still has option in it. He ran it at Sam as well. He also ran it some at Southern. I can not remember what he did at Blinn or CMSU, but he has always ran something that fits his players.

Name one. The Flex- or Wingbone offenses with their quick drive blocking would be very effective against SEC defenses.
Really, no one ever really stopped the Single Wing 60 years ago or the Wishbone 30 years ago. What killed them is it became tougher to recruit top tier athletes to play offenses in those systems. A triple option offense would still be effective today.
