Shea Dixon said this is worth keeping an eye on this because Austin Thomas is close with Scott Woodward and Frank Wilson.

Why is it that people think that paying players didn’t exist before NIL? Every major SEC school pays for play today and 15 years ago.
The fact that this kind of shite gets continually posted here is concerning.
Yes, players got paid before NIL. But it was not even in the same universe. There are now publicly traded companies, well-known alumni, etc., who would have never even considered giving players money, that are giving 6-figures in NIL.
That kind of shite NEVER happened before. Not even close.
Getting 5k and a car happened. Getting a bullshite job happened. The idea that players were regularly getting 6-figures of cash is ridiculous. The IRS would have gotten involved.
There were certainly rumors of elite players like Cam Newton and Zion Williamson getting paid big and maybe there was the occasional anomaly, but anything other than a car and maybe some spending money was extremely rare.

I also get why BK might not want to play NIL like Lane is doing. He wants to build a certain way...
Lane is going for the gold right now before he loses studs like Judkins. And he has to go NIL transfer portal route because Ole Miss just doesn't land top HS classes. Go look at the 3-star loaded class he just brought in. I think it ranked 18 or 20th? Heck, that's good for Ole Miss.
You could argue it's the right strategy for Ole Miss and a lot of schools because you a proven guy like Nolan with college experience -- he should be getting more $$$ than an unproven HS kid with his hand out.

Building through the portal gets you what happened to Florida State this year: half their team opted out of the Orange Bowl vs. Georgia had almost no opt outs.
One team was built through the portal and one was built through high school recruiting.
Portal can bring instant results, but it's horrible for team culture and long-term stability.

Well now Judkins is in the portal because he is upset at his nil deal.
I get why ole miss is doing it this way and even get BK going the other way. Also BK is smarter than Dabo since it’s only speculation off actions on how he feels about NIL instead of Dabo parading his hate for it and the portal.
I do wish we would be a bit more agressive in buying top talent when needed particularly at DB.
We might be the best in the game at getting NIL once you are here and we do it very well in minor sports and baseball.
Football has had nice deals
Basketball just is laying dead but such is life with McLoser

UGA had a lot of guys out either leave through the portal or sat the bowl game due to “injury”.

This is exactly right! LSU is in a completely different position than Ole Miss. Every school is different.
We must be doing something right because even with all the turnover with coaches and losing three games, we only had two players leave who we probably rather keep. It just so happens to be two of the deepest positions and players who haven’t played much or at all.
We have a top 7 class in a down year in Louisiana and we aren’t done. We could end up with a top 5 class in a down year instate with all this coach turnover. That’s crazy these days! Not to mention having a top 2 class with very promising top 10 players at their position highly interested in the program. Coupled with lots of instate talent yet to commit.
This could pick up with all the coaching hires. The defense could dramatically improve this year as well. We have talent, we need to put it all together.

Virtually no key players. Kirby even addressed it after the game.

Bringing Thomas back would be a smart move. Especially if he is going to be in charge of NIL

I know some programs have established a position that they call "general manager" but its surprising to me that to this point the position hasn't taken off in a more professionally oriented tasking of the job.
I mean the AD and the head coach both have other tasks that demand their attention. You'd think there exists an administrative void between the two. That's something we don't really have in college football, that being an executive position between the power structure (the AD) and the on field coaching.
In my mind, I can see a professional style football franchise GM taking off. Someone whose entire job is to manage matters of football. Player personnel, recruiting boards, scouting, NIL, transfer portal management etc. That may be taking a share off the head coach's plate but I think it would function similar to an NFL franchise.

AT was prior to O. and only left for a huge raise the first time.
O had plenty of good coaches on staff but he lost a lot of them after 2019.
but main issue after 2019 was covid and how O handled it and the roster after that. he was a disaster at that because he stopped paying attention. i think he was burned out some and had tons going on in his personal life.
Also many of those good coaches were holdovers from Miles, but Frank, Corey, baker, brad davis, Steve E, Brady, Aranda were all good position coaches/OC/DC
many of those though were hold overs.

To be fair we were all in on anyone but Alleva. I would’ve voted for my meth head cousin to get the job if it meant Alleva got fired and I fricking hate that guy.

Didn't Woodward play a role in bringing AT to A&M?
Posted on 1/4/24 at 6:53 pm to Handsome Pete
Well he left to take a big raise at usc and hated it. Woody scooped him to A&M and AT took pay cut to go

Thank you. You renewed my faith that there are people left out there who get it.
