Mike Sherman recruited some pros and had one hell of an offensive line

This is a legitimately tough exercise, aside from Fran being a clear last place. The A&M that Sherman coached at was a far cry from what Jimbo was at as far as resources and facilities. And while Sumlin had more to work with than Sherman, he also had the offensive line and skill position talent he inherited from Sherman.
I’m almost inclined to put Sherman 1 and Jimbo and Sumlin 2a and 2b
None were close to good enough. Sherman was an atrocious in game coach who made a lot of uninspired old man assistant hires

Sumlin and his teams were the most entertaining at least

Pretty easy to rank.
Sumlin
Jimbo
Sherman
Franchione
Sumlin was just a huge waste of potential. He could have really done some great things there if he hadn't pissed off Kyler Murray and hit the bottle so hard.

Johnny made Sumlin. He sucked without him

Mike Sherman —> Tim DeRuyter, Int.
Kevin Sumlin —> Jeff Banks, Int.
Jimbo Fisher —> Elijah Robinson, Int.

sherman had his problems but i liked the guy. got a lot out of people like Tannehill, Christine Michael, Von Miller, etc.
Franchione ruined Courtney Lewis, Reggie McNeal, Martellus Bennett, etc.

If a football game was only 30 minutes long, Mike Sherman would have been the GOAT. 2011 (I think) was such a strange year. That team had so much potential.
My ranking:
Sherman
Sumlin- Fisher tie
Fran

Why? They all accomplished about the same level of nothing.
The next coach will do no better.

RC Slocum was probably the best in recent memory

I followed A&M tangentially back in those days but didn't Sherman get fired because of a late season swoon after like a 7-0 start? Seems like I thought at the time y'all were hasty on the draw. I always thought Sumlin was fail waiting to happen.

No. He blew 5 or 6 double digit halftime leads the year he got fired. He was also pretty vocal about not being on board with moving to the SEC

Man, I actually believed he was going to be a Heisman finalist heading into 2005. Their whole season ended up becoming a dumpster fire.
Curiosity got me looking up Fran's record in November because A&M always seemed to faceplant at the end of the year: 4-12...5-16 if you include the last week of October.

This garbage is only matched by the city itself.

2005
Last year and Sherman’s first year were bad but 2005 was just brutal. Colorado, Iowa State, Clemson, and Tech were all brutal and incompetent losses. I was there for the loss in Lubbock.

The most telling thing about this list is that all 4 are far inferior to RC Slocum.
