OM AD is btw a rock & hard place. He can’t fire Kiffin- b/c then they owe him his buyout

And Kiffin is not going to resign.
So the only option the AD had was to let him coach the Egg Bowl

could they have put him on paid leave?
Posted on 11/21/25 at 4:13 pm to Covingtontiger77
reassign his duties?

What are you hinting at Chicken? What do you know?

Did he not have a mitigation or offset clause? If he had a salary offset then it wouldn't matter, after LSU pays him more than his current contract.

It’s honestly pretty crappy of Lane to keep his current and possibly future employer in suspense. Both schools will need to find alternatives but instead, he’s hijacking the situation.
Hope LSU has a viable backup in case.

I mean I guess they could , but on what grounds?
He’s not in violation of any provision to his contract. He was hired to be the “Head Football Coach.” Don’t see how they could hold him out of the game, if wasn’t in violation of his current deal.
And actually holding him out would almost be tantamount to firing him and Sexton may seek damages under the contract.

His buyout is like 3 mil

Dont you need a reason to put him on paid leave?

The $3m is what he would have to pay to get out of his deal- which LSU will pay Ole Miss

Why couldnt he resign, exactly?

Agreement to allow him to finish the regular season lets them achieve that, while the "interim" guys get a head's up and some time to plan on those playoff games. Ole Miss can start looking in earnest, LSU (or Florida) goes to autopilot for a week prepping for the announcement.
Fanbases are the only ones stressing on this timetable, but we will all get over it and continue to support the school of our choice.

They could.fire him without cause
Not like he isn't going to be working. Next year

He’s likely got a clause like every other coach that reduces his buyout according to his new salary so they likely wouldn’t owe him anything in that scenario
