He’s likely got a clause like every other coach that reduces his buyout according to his new salary
Kiffin does not have an offset clause in his contract with OM

And then owe him $36m
Which would be immediately offset by his new contract. They’d owe him nothing

Buy out is zero if he gets a job earning more than he makes now.

Alternate point of view here- it's honestly pretty crappy for the Ole Miss players to lose their head coach in a playoff run, where they may finish regular season 11-1.
Agreement to allow him to finish the regular season lets them achieve that, while the "interim" guys get a head's up and some time to plan on those playoff games. Ole Miss can start looking in earnest, LSU (or Florida) goes to autopilot for a week prepping for the announcement.
Fanbases are the only ones stressing on this timetable, but we will all get over it and continue to support the school of our choice.

This doesn’t make any sense. Any future employer would prefer him come on board sooner than later. Letting him continue to coach is a courtesy to him and the school he is currently at.
I don’t see Lane having any interest in playing this card.
And is there no mitigation duty in his buyout?

Conduct detrimental to the team?

But they aren’t going to do that. They aren’t putting him on paid leave for a chance to try and make the playoffs.

Why couldnt he resign, exactly?
Because Lane wants to earn 7th SEC win bonus.

Owe him his buyout???
The guy has 2 schools bidding on him right now. It's a sure thing that he will be making more money somewhere else next year and the buyout will be mitigated to the point of not having to pay it. It's as safe of a firing as you could make.

Again, Kiffin does not have this clause in his contract. If they fire him they owe him the buyout regardless of his next job's salary.

Lane has everybody in a pickle. Should change the name of next week’s game to the Deviled Egg Bowl.

Ah. Well that's even more reason that OM's AD is a weak little bitch.
