This and showing stability to the selection committee to get into the playoffs. They don't want Kelly leaving to be a reason for the committee to exclude them.

If ND makes the playoffs, wouldn't Freeman be the first black head coach in the playoffs? Or am I forgetting someone? I wonder if this was at least partially an attempt to sway the playoff committee this year if ND is one of a couple of "maybes" for the 4th spot. It would make for a great media story, at least till ND got blown out. You might say the committee shouldn't take such things in to account, but I think most would agree they definitely would.

Funny how angry and vindictive they are about Kelly leaving. I hope it fires him up

Oh, come on. If LSU was 11-1 and their coach left, this board would be melt city.

but I expect there will be a drop off from Kelly, at least for the first few years.

Really, I would expect the opposite. Kelly has set the program up pretty well for success in the next couple of seasons. I would guess he will have some success, build his ego up sky high, then come crashing down to the reality he doesn't really know how to run a big time program.

if ND was assured of missing the playoff and Cincy was out too I feel confident Fickell would be the next ND head coach and Freeman would take his spot as the head guy at Cincy.

I don’t blame them for being angry he left; that makes total sense and we would be to. What I find funny are the countless ND fans coming out of the woodwork declaring that this is an upgrade and they were winning in spite of Kelly, and thus the team is much better off.

A first time HC with limited coordinator experience and a second year OC who has never run his own offense. I see this ending well. What could possibly go wrong?

I also definitely don't see the young black man with no experience in the position having trouble dealing with the old, white, and extremely conservative boosters who think they're the best program in the country and that the name will sell itself so you don't actually need to pay assistants or upgrade facilities.

11-1 this year and 10+ wins last five years with the “Old Dog” Where do you think you go from there with “Young guns” without one day of HC experience? Enjoy your fountain of youth and 8-4 seasons

I love when people think the Players, who for the most part only spend 3-4 years there, should have a say so.

And no experience in running a program.

This is very risky for ND.

Inexperience matters. You learn very little over the years ...

The players were fired up about Les potentially losing his job and then carried him off the field. They were fired up to save his job with all the facebook moms and we saw how that turned out the next season. Good luck ND, you’re going to need it.

Yeah, being 11-1, six in the playoff poll must’ve been a terrible vibe for them to have to endure.

Come on guy, that wasn’t even a good try lolol
