I think they were a little too focused on keeping their class together. It's top 5 iirc.

I like their new HC, but ND still has the same problem that led CK to leave. Academic requirements, facilities, etc.

All things being even, if you took the two teams that play for the NC this year and sift their rosters through the academic requirements of ND and remove ALL THOSE PLAYERS that don't meet those standards....that is a huge part of ND's limitation.

It also seems that ND is content with ND being the thing that recruits kids and not all the other things that EVERYOTHER team has put in place to get kids to their respective schools.

Also, so what you are saying is that this team was sandbagging and not giving 100% as of last week? But now, they will?

ND is like any other school. A bad hire can sink a program, but a good hire can resurrect it. Their bad hires are a lot more common than their good hires over the last 40 years. We’ll see how Freeman turns out.

Make Freeman the interim until the CFP picture shakes out. Selecting him this fast shows they put no effort into a thoughtful, deliberate selection process.

Rarely does a staff member move up work out long term that I can recall. I'm sure they're out there but the numbers over time % wise would be a no go.

Dabo taking over after Tommy Bowden got fired is probably the most prominent example of it working out, and anyone from Clemson who saw him being this successful is lying.

There was strong support from players on Twitter for Freeman. The usual “we don’t need that old white guy” attitude. Would have been tough for a new incoming coach to win the locker room.

They also hired a guy with zero head coaching experience that players love. That always ends well right

I think people are obsessed with youth. I can't tell you how much smarter I am at 40 vs what I was at 29 or 35

The Head Coach is not just about game prep and coaching. Its much more administrative - planning the program, talent evaluation, managing and developing coordinators, relationships with stakeholders (booster, high school coaches), etc. Freeman to HC means he has to replace Freeman as DC and start managing a young OC in Reese. Unlike NFL, which is primarily game planning, coaching and talent evaluation, a College HC is much more administrative. Administrative skills combined with coaching skills are required. Best College Coaches like Saban and Urban are leaders with superior coaching knowledge, but they did not do well in the NFL. Bright, young coaches can be successful in the NFL because with the right front office its all about the coaching, but are likely can struggle at large college programs until they get experience administering a program. Freeman's success will depend on how much support ND provides on the administrative responsibilities.

I get Freeman is a great coach, don't get me wrong. But he's a first time HC taking the job in South Bend....

That's a TALL order for any coach, let alone a rookie HC.

I think he'll ultimately do well, but I expect there will be a drop off from Kelly, at least for the first few years.

It would be kind of funny if this leads to Freeman leaving to be OSUs coach in a year or two if Day left

I think the comment from the playoff committee scared them. I can't imagine they wouldn't prefer go after Fickell if the timing weren't different. But they made a long-term decision for a short-term solution. They knew they could promote Freeman and keep most of their staff together. Sometimes it works out like Dabo or Lincoln Riley. But you probably have more examples for it not working out like Bobby Williams, Mike Archer, Bob Davie, Clay Helton, etc. Ed O and Larry Coker are in a league of their own since they peaked early then failed miserably.

This and showing stability to the selection committee to get into the playoffs. They don't want Kelly leaving to be a reason for the committee to exclude them. I didn't think about it until Tuesday when Reese Davis was interviewing the head of the committee, but he said coaching changes absolutely can be factored in when deciding the 4 best teams.

It’s like they don’t remember Bob Davie at all. We saw this mistake here before… ND is being short sighted and making a mistake not hiring Fickell.

You’re a 1000% correct.
Seen this movie before and the juice isn’t worth the squeeze. It could set ND back a decade when it goes south.
You wanna know the difference between being a “player’s” coach and a great coach is?
A “player’s” coach will ask a player to run through a wall for him, a great coach won’t have to, his players will have already done it.

Funny how angry and vindictive they are about Kelly leaving.

He left them while they are in playoff contention. From the team’s perspective, its bad just to leave before a season is complete. Much worse when you are competing for a championship.

That doesn’t make it morally wrong on Coach Kelly’s part. But you can’t really blame them for being vindictive.
