Kansas HC Leipold
Duke HC Elko
Tulane HC Fritz
Arizona HC Fisch
Washington HC DeBoer
Mizzou HC Drinkwitz
Louisville HC Brohm
Liberty HC Chadwell
NC State HC Doeren
Oregon State HC Smith
Toledo HC Candle
James Madison HC Cignetti
SMU HC Lashlee

Any more?

None of the ones listed above are splash hires but all have proven the ability to work the portal (masterfully in my opinion) and build a program rather quickly in a time of uncertainty and change for the sport.

Fritz took the longest to build out his program but has it rolling now. When was the last time Tulane had consistent success like this?

These should be the guys that the AD for 8&4 should be looking at according to his initial press report the night of the firing of Jimbo.

Just a fun little thread for the program builders.

Program builders dont necessarily translate to a big time program that doesnt need to be built

You're right Cosmo, but I'm just putting the list out there as I would have it after listening closely to what the AD wants and knowing they are shopping for value. But I agree with you, they have to get this right.

And about half of those either took over a program built by someone else, or are too early in their tenure to determine whether they’ve built a program or a team.

Might be best dc in country. Kelly and jimbo best years at notre dame and atm were because of him. He won like 9 games at Duke last yr, and beat clemson, almost beat notre dame.

If you watched their games he had Duke playing football way I wish we did on defense. Sound tackling, flying to the ball. Make fun of the hire all you want, but it's a home run if they get him.

Hall of fame coaches aren't just sitting in coaching free agency portal. You can't steal a saban, Kirby, etc. Have to try to find someone who can become that.

Atm needed to hire someone not flashy cause jimbo was all talk.

Those are just prominent/well known names who haven’t been successful consistently. Nothing about them screams assured success

Program builders stay more than 2 years.

Elko was gifted some significant developing players and had a mature team when he took over from Cutciff.

The rebuild was already in place for Duke the previous 2 years and Elko took all the credit.

He's a good coach, but people need to cool it with the "he's a program builder".

Cignetti has done a great job at JMU, but he didn't build that program. They were already winning when he got there. The previous coach won an FCS championship and multiple conference championships.

He did turn around IUP and Elon.

He still beat teams his program had no business beating. And produced a defense way above their recrtuing rankings. Again, at Duke. I get cutliffe had some great offenses and qbs run through there... but who would ever imagine saying I like how that duke defense hits, or man that duke team is really physical... with the players they get?? Elko is very much the real deal at dc. At minimum he'll have an elite defense. Recruiting ain't going anywhere but top 5, cause $$ isn't leaving.

They needed a bland basic b hire, to ground the program and team. See if it works. Kelly has a job to keep improving our team as well, so let's see who does it better.

I think he will be a damn good coach, but this simply isn't true.

The one year he coached at Notre Dame (2017) is far from being Kelly's best. Their defense was barely top 50 that year, also not Kelly's best.

Final W/L

2017 10-3 ELko
2018 12-1
2019 11-2
2020 10-2
2021 11-2

Notre Dame's Total Defense Rankings-

2017 -46 Elko
2018 -30
2019 -18
2020 -25
2021 -43

We get it. You guys are excited and that’s great. For all that, he was 7-5 last year. It is what it is.

Jerry Kill has to be one of the best out there. He'll never get the recognition he deserves but he's done it at two of the worst jobs in cfb
