I actually wouldn’t be as surprised if Kingsbury was black with the Rooney Rule.

Can I throw out Mike Tomlin? It seems weird because he's been very successful, but the team that had freakin Dick LeBeau and kept him on went defense (only one year as DC) on a coach to replace Bill Cower. Add to that he was coming off a season where his defense was the worst against the pass in the league and he runs a 4-3 while LeBeau runs a 3-4.

Yes, but the cardinals are trying to be the browns of the west.

When you go the longtime loyal assistant route, you often wind up with Richie Pettibon, another WTF hire

Biggest WTF HC hire in NFL History had to be the Saints hiring JD Roberts. New Orleans was able to poach him from the semi pro Richmond Roadrunnes.

The Jets hired Lou Holtz.

Thought about that too, but he had at least had 4 winning seasons at NC St. Way before my time though and I've never read much about the decision, just seen some videos about what a disaster it was.

Kiffin was a bigger one. Went from a college co-oc to hc of the Raiders. No head coaching experience. Never even a coordinator by himself. He was 31 (I think) when he got the job. Easily the biggest WTF in NFL history.
bogus tuck rule call gave New England the ball back after sack.
Else raiders to super bowl.
Gruden was coaching the Raiders when the tuck rule game happened, not Kiffin.
Kiffin was 4 coaches after Gruden. Bill Callahan, Norv Turner, Art Shell, then Kiffin.

He’ll have a field day with white women in Scottsdale.

How many black coaches are offensive minds, offensive innovators, successful QB coaches?

i think the worst WTF hires are coaches who you kind of figure from Day 1 just to be there for a paycheck
Think Saints Ditka or Gruden this past year

Lovie smith to Illinois was pretty wild

I thought the Kingsbury hire was ridiculous.
I know people are saying he's a "great offensive mind". I think he is a spread offense guy who coached in a conference full of them, and a conference that plays no defense. He did this, and failed to win many games, despite being given more time than he probably should have gotten to turn it around.
You can get spread offense guys just about anywhere, and that's fine as an offensive coordinator. But he's already had a crack at being a big fish in a medium size pond, and did not succeed. Why would anyone think he is now going to be a big fish in a big pond?
There is no logic in this hire.

Edwards to Arizona State was a pretty big WTF moment.

People are so dumb. Kliff will develop their investment, young QB, and will have no part in personnel or defensive hirings. This will be just fine.

Maybe for a team led by Rodgers who ultimately will dictate what he wants but with
Rosen.. I don’t believe it.. Kliff is more relatable.. more flexible to tailor an offensive philosophy to mold him.. the jets and the cardinals were really good spots for someone of his ability.. he will succeed or fail based on his ability to develop a QB (a skill set he has proven ability in) and the organization surrounding him with an average defense. Ultimately, I’m intrigued by a team taking the road less travelled and not hiring a retread or some unknown coordinator just because he has nfl coaching experience
He could easily fail in Arizona but is it any worse than firing a coach after year one
This is spot on.

The only thing dumber would be if the cardinals traded josh Rosen to draft Kyler Murray.

I shake my head every time I see this kind of explanation behind a hire.
If Kliff is there to "develop their investment", then he could have been hired as an offensive coordinator. The head coach is responsible for far more than developing one player, and Kingsbury has already proven he's not very good at that.
Furthermore, having a good offense in college does not mean he's good at developing QB's. You know who his mentor is? Mike Leach. He runs the same type of offense and always has QB's, who no one has heard of, put up huge numbers. Like Kliff, himself. And what do they do in the pros? Nothing. They are system QB's. A system that doesn't work in the NFL.
Pat Mahomes is the one guy between Kingsbury and Leach who has had success in the NFL. But Mahomes was actually not that accurate, and a rather poor decision maker at Texas Tech. Andy Reid is the one who really made him better, just as he was somehow able to do with Alex Smith.
In short, there is just no evidence that Kingsbury is a developer of talent. There is, however, evidence that he isn't head coaching material.
