That's how far our program was set back between Archer and Saban.

Huh? Really?

Let's be real. Mike Archer took over a decent team and failed to recruit properly. LSU went from 10-1 to 5-6.

That said, Mike Archer is not the reason LSU hired Curley Hallman, or replaced Hallman with DiNardo.

Don't blame Mike Archer for the AD's mistakes. When did LSU take a step into the national spotlight?

LSU became a national power when they stopped hiring from Louisiana / SEC and hired the best coach in the Big Ten.

I guess you can do it when you have an established offensive culture and coaches who actually KNOW how to coordinate one side of the ball..

you know, x and o type of guys..

Why would you take a chance on an up and coming young coach when you can get a proven guy with a 10-25 career record as head coach?

A lot of those coaches came into good situations and were already on the staff. A first time head coach would have been better the coach O. Everyone already knows that coach O is average at best .

Because not every one is a Lincoln Riley. And Ryan Day’s signature victory was a bad TCU team. Let’s see what happens before we annoint him the next best thing.

Correct, LSU and OSU both have multiple national championships since OU's last championship.

Damn you’re an idiot on multiple boards. Your OP is right though. No school should be “too good” to hire assistants

I have been questioning this philosophy for a while. Here is a list of coaches that never would have been considered to coach at LSU as a first time coach and had great success at their respective programs:

Chip Kelly
Gary Patterson
Bob Stoops
Dabo Sweeny
David Shaw
Jimbo Fisher
Mike Gundy
Kirby Smart
Lincoln Riley

Why is this downvoted? Stoops definitely wasn't a promotion.

I too have been questioning this philosophy but most of this list is pure 20/20 hindsight. We could probably comprise a list 10 times longer of guys that failed. Of that list the only guys LSU should reasonably have considered would be Fisher, Stoops, Smart and maybe Shaw and Riley.

McClendon, Stovall, Archer...you’ve been there.
Even O wasn’t exactly hired because of his work at Ole Miss.

Of course it is. It’s not a list of “these are coaches” that we missed on but instead demonstrate the potential upside of coaches that wouldn’t get any interest because of our current philosophy.

You can also make a long list of proven head coaches that have failed as well such as Kevin Sumlin, Rich Rodriguez, Larry Fedora, etc.

My point is our current philosophy significantly limits potential to get the next great coach.
