If Kelly is waiting on a NFL person in the playoffs for OC, who could it be?

That suggestion created a melt of a thread the other day. He’s most likely happy to stay in the NFL. It could still be Sloan, I’m just curious if he’s waiting, does that mean it’s a NFL guy?

There aren’t many givens in life. There’s only a 99.99% chance that it isn’t anyone in the NFL. However, there’s a 100% chance it isn’t Joe Brady.

Seems obvious he’s promoting Sloan and maybe Hankton.

There are 5 coaches on defense. 4 on offense and we need a TE coach by most accounts. So that’s 10. No room for anyone new or an ST coordinator unless Sloan or Hankton plan to leave. Its math

Because it was the 7 thousandth one since Denbrock left.

That too.

Probably will be.

No, it will not be an NFL guy. No NFL OC in the playoffs is leaving to come to LSU. And no NFL position coach wouldn't already be announced. House was the Chiefs LB coach when we hired him as DC. We announced it, but he still stayed with the Chiefs through their playoff run and even helped recruit while doing it. And if Kelly is hiring a position coach who doesn't call plays to be his OC, he would just hire Sloan (which he likely is). I just can't conceive of a scenario where's he's waiting on anybody from the NFL.

Things they are more than likely waiting on before announcing entire offensive staff:

--figuring out what they're going to do with Special Teams
--hiring a TEs coach (those 2 things are likely connected)
--figuring out how they want to split and assign duties
--figuring out/negotiating new titles, raises, contracts for both Sloan and Hankton

He named them Co-coordinators solely for the bowl game. He did not do so for the 2024 season. That may end up being the case, but he hasn't done so yet.

If you’re saying Joe Brady, why would he leave the Bills OC job for ours? He’s doing well there and is an nfl guy. Would be a downgrade for him I think.

I don't understand why this continues to be a conversation.

It clearly seems to be either Sloan/Hankton as Co OCs or Sloan taking it over by himself.

Who knows if he's ready but I'm willing to roll the dice on him and we need to keep him happy regardless until Bryce gets here.

It's obvious isn't it? With the rumor of Andy Reid retiring after the season? He's stepping down to be LSU's OC. Obviously he thinks that Nuss has more talent than Mahomes.

You don't give promotions because someone "deserves" it. That's how you Peter principle yourself into losing seasons.

Meh. I get what you're saying, but never promoting from within is also a good way to prevent the hiring of good, ambitious position coaches. Sloan was in the booth with Denbrock every game and Kelly worked with him every day for 2 years. "Deserves" is kind of semantics--Kelly has plenty of information to know whether or not he thinks Sloan is ready and will do a good job.

And the goal is to get assemble the best staff possible, working in concert as a unit. Sometimes, the whole is better than the sum of its parts. You could go out and hire the #1 rated coach at every single position, and that doesn't guarantee they will be good together as a staff.

Not a fan of merit-based promotions, I see. How do you give promotions then? Nepotism?

It might be irrational but the only NFL guy I would even think about giving a shot is Brady.

I’ve seen too many NFL coaches suck dick at the college level.

OK mathematician. What if the offensive coordinator is a TE coach, like our last one?
