And you have to take into account “talent gap” and then big question is was he doing more with less

What's hard to understand? The DC Kelly wanted coached linebackers. Baker was your linebacker coach. You don't carry two linebacker coaches.

Keep Baker and make him DC. No need to hire House.

What is funny about this statement is that yes, he was the LB coach at lsu, but he is the defensive backs / safeties coach at Mizzou in addition to being DC. So BK could have kept him on staff and moved him to a different grouping like Mizzou did. Instead, we hired two of the worst defensive backs coaches in LSU history.

Tony Gibson from NC state

Or

Jim Leonard who is an analyst at Illinois. He took a step back from coaching last year cuz he had hip surgery but he’s fully recovered and was really good at whisky.

Fans are emotional but I think most fans on a message board can give you a decent observation when removed from the emotions of a game/season.

Had I asked the question in the middle of the LSU vs Mizzou game. Their fans would probably shite on Baker. Had I asked the question in the middle of their bowl game, their fans would have crowned him the GOAT. I asked about him after the season when no emotions were at play which is as clear headed as a fan can be.

Again, I'm not saying that this fan's opinion is the end all be all but it does confirm what I think the numbers show which is that Baker isn't the most proven guy on the market.

Also want to reiterate that he is better than House and I'd be happy if we hired him. I just think Jim Leonard is a better choice.

Most fans are idiots.

They believe they know more about football than people that have spent their lives earning a living coaching.

He’s been a successful DC in the SEC now and house was brought in to be DC and he’s a linebacker coach so there was no need for baker

He has been a mixed bag at Mizzou. First half of 2022 season, our D was stellar. Second half of the season the SEC had enough film on him the D went to shite.

This year the D was not good to start the year. No way around it. It got better as the year went on but still had a piss poor performance vs Florida and a mediocre day vs UGA. There were good performances vs South Carolina, Tenn and Arkansas. By far the best performance all year was against tOSU but a lot of that might have been because their OL was dogshit.

Overall, if i had to guess i'd say Baker is probably a top 20-30 DC nationally right now. The question is whether he is going to adjust to everyone having more data on him now and improve? If not, he'll start falling pretty fast. Personally I dont think he is worth backing up the brinks truck for at this point. He needs more experience and proven record.

This a quote from a Mizzou fan. I'll be ok if we hire Baker but I'd rather a more proven DC. He seems like a Pete Golding type that is a good recruiter and players love him but hasn't proven to be dominant week to week.

agree with ALL of this...

still think it needs to be Leonard or the Michigan guy...

Not picking sides here, I just want to point out that this is with Mizzou talent. Not the talent that LSU should have year in and year out. Baker at LSU is going to be able to have an advantage that you only get at about 8 schools.

One of whom everyone knew was complete arse (Cooks) as soon as he was hired.

At least Peoples had potential as a recruiter (and he did help in that initial transfer window). Cooks was a known commodity of shite.

At that time he didn’t have the experience of Kerry Cooks so Miller went to Missouri to coach safeties.

This is a HUGE prisoner of the moment comment. Nothing about anything he has done at Mizzou would be described as a miracle.

Again, he would be much better than House, I just think there are better more proven guys out there.

We get it, you learned the phrase "prisoner of the moment" the other day and can't wait to use it everywhere

Some scatter-shooting as the late Blackie Sherrod used to say.
1) As others have said, not retaining Blake Baker by Brian Kelly was understandable given House's background in position coaching (LBer coach for the Chiefs)
2) Finishing 34th nationally in yards allowed 2 years in a row (around 340 yards) playing an SEC schedule is impressive... PERIOD!
3) No one has ever accused Missouri of having upper echelon SEC talent yet he made it work
4) IMO, he APPEARS to be top 5 to 8 top DC in college. Pretty sure any knowledgeable football person would put a young up and comer DC over the retreads that keep getting hired. Want to guess how many stops just fired OU DC Ted Roof has made over 35 years... 17 total with 15 different schools. Not all were as DC but most were.

I don't have a crystal ball but Baker seems like a good hire!

Kelly cleaned house by moving on from coordinator/linebackers coach Matt House, safeties coach Kerry Cooks, cornerbacks coach Robert Steeples and defensive line coach Jimmy Lindsey.
Hiring Baker from SEC opponent Missouri was a boss move.
