So, Baker was already on staff when Kelly was hired at LSU. And, he wasn’t retained. Being this is one of the most important hires of Kelly’s career, what is it about Baker today that wasn’t true 2 years ago?

He’s been a successful DC in the SEC now and house was brought in to be DC and he’s a linebacker coach so there was no need for baker

2 years of SEC DC experience fielding top 30ish defenses definitely helps.

Experience being an SEC DC at this time at a successful program vs no experience as an SEC DC at a successful program.

Glad to help.

He has been a mixed bag at Mizzou. First half of 2022 season, our D was stellar. Second half of the season the SEC had enough film on him the D went to shite.

This year the D was not good to start the year. No way around it. It got better as the year went on but still had a piss poor performance vs Florida and a mediocre day vs UGA. There were good performances vs South Carolina, Tenn and Arkansas. By far the best performance all year was against tOSU but a lot of that might have been because their OL was dogshit.

Overall, if i had to guess i'd say Baker is probably a top 20-30 DC nationally right now. The question is whether he is going to adjust to everyone having more data on him now and improve? If not, he'll start falling pretty fast. Personally I dont think he is worth backing up the brinks truck for at this point. He needs more experience and proven record.

This a quote from a Mizzou fan. I'll be ok if we hire Baker but I'd rather a more proven DC. He seems like a Pete Golding type that is a good recruiter and players love him but hasn't proven to be dominant week to week.

I'm not saying this fan is an expert but I know he watches a hell of a lot more Mizzou football than I did the past 2 years.

I think LSU fans are being prisoners of the moment with Baker. We remember how much the LBers improved when he was here and we all saw how good the Mizzou defense looked against OSU in the bowl game and now we are clamoring for a guy that hasn't really proven much as a DC.

I am definitely not an expert so maybe I am wrong and he's the next Kirby Smart but his resume as a DC isn't much to write home about. Dominating an OSU team that was on its 3rd string QB and missing its best WR in a game that they admittedly didn't prepare for isn't much of a skin on the wall imo. Also Mizzou's success this year was much more offense based than defense.

Some comparisons using the UGA game this year (UGA averaged 495 yards/game):

Ole Miss gave up 52 points, 611 yards
Kentucky gave up 51 points, 608 yards
Tenn gave up 32 points, 472 yards
Mizzou gave up 30 points, 385 yards
Alabama gave up 24 points, 321 yards

That would be accurate. Baker is a defensive coach rising star. There's always some danger when you hire those guys because their sample size is small, but he worked miracles for Mizzou in a short time period and is a big part of why they're good this year.

I don’t need him to pitch shutouts, keep teams under 25 points

People like you are so stupid. Is this not a message board where we share our opinions?

No one said LSU gives af what I think but we all have opinions and feelings about what LSU or BK does every day of the week and then we discuss it on this board. If you don't want to read how other people feel about the happenings with LSu football then go read a book.

BB took Mizzou from #105 to #25 in NCAA defense rankings…

This is a HUGE prisoner of the moment comment. Nothing about anything he has done at Mizzou would be described as a miracle.

Again, he would be much better than House, I just think there are better more proven guys out there.

Agreed.

And if he didn't have Louisiana ties (or a prior stint at LSU) NO ONE on this board would be talking about him. Particularly after LSU hung 49 on his defense...at home. LSU only scored 48 vs. Auburn. Why isn't Ron Roberts getting mentioned?

I do think he'd be an improvement over House. (Though that's not saying a lot). But I don't get, at all, why so many on here think he should be the "leading candidate".

What's hard to understand? The DC Kelly wanted coached linebackers. Baker was your linebacker coach. You don't carry two linebacker coaches.
