They replaced Lou Holtz with DC Bob Davie. They have done this before.

How'd that work out for them?

And yes, other young coaches have become HCs and succeeded. No outcome is guaranteed.

Freeman very well could light it up. ND is under pressure to hire someone immediately, and Freeman no doubt is the easiest choice in some respects. Still would strike me as a little panicky.

He could be the next Stoops or Smart, but I don't understand this move.

Kelly left that program in great shape. Notre Dame can damn near hire whoever they want, and they're giving the keys to a P5 DC for one year.

And Notre Dame has had great DC's under Kelly before, namely Bob Diaco and Clark Lea. Neither has panned out as a HC.

That's probably the only hire that will ensure the majority of the staff staying. An outside coach will always want to bring in their guys.

Sounds like what MSU did when Saban left. Hired Bobby Williams.

Lose your HC to another team while in the playoff hunt and then hire a guy that has never been a HC before...that is funny that ND would even contemplate making him the HC.

Eh, you just know some guys are special pretty early on. Smart, Riley, Stoops, Dabo, etc. all were directly promoted as HC's into major programs from a coordinator role.

I am more excited about this than I thought I would be. It's obviously high risk / high reward, and we'll know within a few years if it's working. Freeman has all the makings of a superstar, but we'll see.

Meh, I want Freeman to be successful, I just think he’s gonna be a little over his head for where notre dame sits right now.

Smart money says follow Brian here for 2-3 years, win some championships in the SEC, then collect massively overinflated ridiculous payday as HC of Ohio St or something.

Freeman looking like next ND HC

I feel like this is solely to keep the team intact as best as they can for this year's playoff hopes. I would probably want the same since the committee basically said that losing their coach would be taken into consideration on the final rankings. I'm guessing their logic is that if the staff isn't completely upended in the next week, the committee can't penalize them too much.

They better hope it works, b/c you are otherwise mortgaging your future in the hopes of making a playoff run this year as you at #6.

Yeah idk I think the smarter money is trying your shot at ND HC during the NIL era (ND brand is huge) with a team/staff that is competing for playoffs every year (even on DOWN years like this year) and has terrific classes coming in next few years… worst case scenario, you don’t do as well and go back to being one of the best DCs in the game

To be fair, they've hired some "proven" HCs in the past who have bombed too, most notably Tyrone Willingham and George O'Leary (who beat out Mike Price at Bama as the shortest-tenured HC in major college football history).

Hard to believe that Davie is the 3rd winningest Irish HC since Dan Devine retired after losing the Sugar Bowl for the NC to UGa in 1980.

I mean, I think the ND job has its benefits, but it is not a job where you will win championships anymore. They require players to actually be real student athletes and hold them accountable unlike most schools and don’t get special entry requirements.

I think Freeman will be a good head coach at some point, but ND is not the place you want to make that transition.

I think it will be a slow decline for ND as he learns the ropes of being a head guy.

LSU players literally lobbied the BoS for Mike Archer in 1987.

Both of them were way more proven and actually won championships as coordinators. They also went to programs that didn’t have the limitations that ND does.

One great recruiting class is not the reason to take such a huge risk.

In the end, it’s their choice, but I wouldn’t rush this if I were them. It would be a panic hire when honestly I think they are too focused on the playoff opportunity for this year.

Good for him and good for ND. He will be successful at ND. He will win 9-10 games a year. Maybe make a run at the playoffs too.

I think that's the point, they want to continue the stability of the Kelly era. Some feel Freeman ascending to an upper P5 job is an inevitability anyway so why not?

Day to Chicago could also have legs and Fickell wants to wait on the shot at his true dream gig
