Charlie Strong mentioned as a DC candidate by Dandy Don

I read on Dandy Don that LSU is considering him for DC. That would be a terrible mistake. He was fired as HC at Texas and USF. He is another loser we don't need.

And he was a badass DC who worked his way into contention for high-profile HC jobs.
Fans are so fickle.

I actually disagree and think he would do well at LSU. He keeps things fairly simple but it allows the athletes to play fast. I think he would still be a really good DC. He’s a good recruiter as well.

What does being a good head coach have to do with being a defensive coordinator?

He hasn’t coordinated a defense in 11 years.

I'll take him over Mason.

Pelini

Great recruiter and motivator. Players loved him at Florida.
Big question... can he adapt his schemes to combat the up-tempo RPO/Spreads? If so, he'd be great. If not, he'd suck.

I don’t want retread coaches who failed miserably at high profile pressure type jobs like LSU is

This post says a lot about who you are... but carry on.

This. Do not want another “was a DC in a previous life” coach.
What didn’t we learn from the Bo debacle?

Ahh, the "open minded" liberal who doesn't realize he is actually racist.

Strong hasn’t fully been in charge of a defense in quite some time. I mean he went to Louisville, Texas and then USF.
Last time he called a defense for a season was in 2009. Game has changed a ton since then.

He use to be one of the best DCs in NCAA and also a lights out recruiter which is also rare. That said, he hasn't coordinated in like 13 years or something crazy like that. I don't want a retread hire where NCAA has changed how offenses play. Can he adapt to modern NCAA? I don't know. There's no evidence to suggest he can because he had some absolute shite defenses as HC. Would be a super risky hire and not much improvement over Pelini when you compare them side-by-side. Just another retread dinosaur who has been terrible the past decade or so.

Charlie did a great job at Louisville, immediately reviving the program from its post-Petrino/Kragthorpe slump. (Steve Kragthorpe never had a chance there...but that's another story.) The players loved him and he built a really tough-nosed, disciplined team. Remember, the #21 Cards absolutely demolished #3 Florida in the 2013 Sugar Bowl (33-23) with Teddy Bridgewater under center.
Louisville fans were sorry to see him go to Texas, and I thought it was an odd move, since his recruiting base (both at his various SEC stops and at Louisville) was Florida and Georgia. I wasn't surprised he didn't succeed there, and as recent history has shown, there's obviously some structural issues with that program that weren't his fault. I was surprised and disappointed that he had so little success at USF, however. Perhaps someone from the Tampa area can enlighten us as to why his program went downhill there.
As some have mentioned, Charlie was a very good DC at UF and, I think, South Carolina under Lou Holtz before that. Given what happened at USF, I think it's a legitimate question as to whether he still has gas in the tank. But working for Saban this year certainly would have familiarized him with the current state of SEC offenses.
